Lockdown lowdown on sustainable seafood!

An update from Cornwall Good Seafood Guide - May 2020
Dear <<First Name>>

I hope you are well and are keeping safe during these unprecedented times?

I don't know about you but in our house we are all getting a bit food obsessed!  Food is one of the few things that we can all enjoy during lockdown! Many of us are really enjoying our cooking and having a little more time to spend in the kitchen gives us an opportunity to be a little more adventurous, particularly with seafood.

In this newsletter we hope to be able to help you find your local seafood supplier and to give seafood a try! I'm sure many of you already are doing so but we really need you all to help us spread the word!  Our fishermen need locals to buy their fish, to keep afloat and we all benefit in return from eating healthy, low carbon, local, sustainable seafood! Its delicious!

We have lots to tell you about - new recipes, new funding opportunities for fishermen and seafood businesses to help local sales, our wonderful new Volunteer Abby and our exciting new clothing range!

Since the start of lockdown we have been working tirelessly to build the best possible list of local seafood suppliers still working and offering delivery services! Please keep an eye out on there as we are adding new fishermen and fish sellers daily! Everyone is welcome and being listed is free of charge during the corona virus crisis.

Award winning Cornish private chef Ken Symons spent a day with the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide team in the kitchen just before lockdown.

Ken loves cooking with local Cornish seafood and was delighted to help with this initiative:

“This is a difficult time for chefs but I am really pleased to be able to help inspire people to give seafood a try as it is vital we keep our local fishermen fishing and we all make the most of this incredible local resource.”

The first recipe is featured in a short video which we are sharing on our social media which is pan fried mackerel with a tasty Basque inspired pepperonata (a pepper and garlic stew with capers) that really complements this delicious oily fish beautifully.

“Mackerel is just beginning to come into season and line caught mackerel is about as sustainable as seafood can be”, said Cornwall Seafood Guide’s Matt Slater.

Meet Abby, our new volunteer!

We are delighted to have the help of Abby Masterston, a recent Zoology Masters graduate from the University of Exeter in Penryn.

Abby is highly experienced in fisheries science and sustainability and has joined the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide team to help support our Cornish seafood industry during the Coronavirus crisis.  Abby has been working really hard finding and signing up fishermen and businesses to our suppliers list, keeping this list updated and running the projects social media. Promoting local sustainable seafood by connecting the public to their local fishermen or fish suppliers. She is doing an amazing job!

"I am passionate about supporting sustainable fishermen and it has been a privilege to be able to help out in such a critical time for the industry. I absolutely love getting out on the water and have been fishing with the Henry brothers on Peter John II and Chris Bean’s, The Lady Hamilton. I first started my journey in sustainable seafood when researching in my degree the damage that some fishing practices can have on our oceans, and learning however that when well-managed, sustainable fishing is one of the lowest carbon and most efficient protein sources. It became clear that when choosing seafood consumers generally aren't provided with enough information to make good choices. This is why the work of the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide is so important and I am incredibly happy to be volunteering with them. "

A new funding scheme from the government has just been announced. The 'Domestic Seafood Supply Scheme' aims to support fishermen and seafood business sell direct to local people. This is a really exciting opportunity to help connect local people with their sustainable fishing industry.

The grant will help with projects that:
🐟Maintain the availability of fisheries products through innovative regional distribution.
🐟 Support the development of infrastructure to sell fish landed into English ports, or fish processed in England, to domestic consumers.
🐟 Help develop the infrastructure necessary for the catching and processing sectors to connect directly with consumers (e.g. either through online platforms or through facilitation on the ground).
🐟 Have the potential to generate longer-term sustainable benefit to the seafood industry, creating supply chain resilience.

Lets hope that this fund benefits lots of Cornish fishermen. Cornwall Good Seafood Guide is happy and keen to support where we can.

Surge of public support and demand for online sales and delivery of seafood

There is increasing evidence that the public appreciate and want to eat Cornish sustainable seafood.

Paul Trudgian owner and director of Fish For Thought has seen his online sales for fresh fish deliveries to the public dramatically increase – “the levels of engagement, positivity and support for our business and the amazing fishermen we work with has been humbling. I am so proud of the way our customers and our team have responded to this unprecedented crisis, and I am increasingly optimistic that many more people will join our Seafood Revolution, and demand sustainable British seafood in the future.”

Rob Wing of the online seafood outlet, The Cornish Fishmonger who has also seen online sales and deliveries to the public increase said “it’s an honour and a privilege to be helping feed the nation during this terrible time. We are encouraged how many people are getting behind our fishing industry and we hope that people will continue to support sustainable fishing long after this coronavirus situation is over.”

Our vision - to see a future where productive fisheries co-exist with healthy seas. To achieve this we spread good news and help people make good seafood choices.  We want to help local people reconnect with the Cornish fishing industry and encourage them to eat sustainable Cornish seafood regularly.
The Cornwall Good Seafood Guide rating of seafood sustainability is underpinned by the Marine Conservation Society Good Fish Guide, Who we work closely with to ensure that all of Cornwall's fisheries are represented and all available local infomation is taken into account when scoring.
