Plan to Reduce Social Distancing Restrictions and Implications for Schools

The Spanish Government announced on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, a plan to reduce social distancing restrictions in multiple phases over the next two months depending on the reduction of the Covid-19 pandemic.  On Wednesday, ASV shared with the school community a communication summing up the implications for schools in Spain, according to the information known at this time.

Although many details need to be confirmed by the national and regional authorities it seems that ASV may be able to operate the Preschool program in a modified form.  Our school is requesting additional clarification from the Valencian government (specifically, Conselleria d’Educació) about these regulations and their application.

As always, we will keep you posted as we gain more factual information. You can be assured that ASV is continually adapting to be prepared to make the most beneficial decisions for our students and their families.

General Announcements

May is here! Remember that the curriculum in Elementary School is focused on the Disciplinary Learning Goals, a set of long-term outcomes for ASV students that are depicted in a creative way each month in the school calendar.  This month, 5B represented a goal for Science courses with their own “blueprint”.

Academic Calendar for 2020-2021

The ASV Board of Governors approved the official academic calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year.  The document can be seen on the ASV public website, on the Parent Resources website, and on the school app and contains the key dates already defined for the upcoming year.

Virtual Spirit Week in Elementary School

All classes from Grade 1 to 5 have celebrated a Virtual Spirit Week, combining usual actions in this type of activities.  Students were invited to share photos wearing special attire and costumes, living a “Hat Day” or performing  other creative ideas at home.  Doing things together, though apart, contributed to reinforce the community spirit of elementary.

Engaging Students through Music Lessons (Grades 4-8)

The transition to virtual learning has been a positive experience in Music courses. Last week, Ms. Cecilia Calvelo reported on how children in Preschool and Grades 1 through 3 are enjoying a variety of instrumental and vocal activities in the virtual music lessons.

This week, Ms. Damaris Ortiz, music teacher for Grades 4 through 8, remarks how everyone in these grades is learning more about “the advantages of technology, not only to communicate with each other but to bring our music skills to the forefront by creatively taking advantage of different digital resources.”

In April, students in Grades 4 and 5 “have performed and merged together into a huge recorder orchestra and students have had the opportunity to ‘see’ each other and feel a community spirit in producing music together,” Ms. Ortiz describes.  “Our Middle School musicians have been using their time productively to fine-tune their ukelele skills, explore the multicultural world of music, and hone in on the essential elements of sound,” she adds.

“I am also delighted and proud to report that many students have gone above and beyond to present their own ‘online’ performances playing a variety of instruments of their own.”

ASV is a Pioneer School Using MiMove, a Mobile App for PE Virtual Lessons

ASV is excited to introduce the use of MiMove, an app to enable High School students to log the exercise that they are completing at home as part of their virtual Physical Education lessons. The Athletic Department has been extremely impressed with the commitment of our students to maintain their fitness throughout this complicated situation. It has been great to see so many family members joining in and supporting their children’s fitness in the videos that students have submitted as evidence of their work at home.

Information for Grade 11 and 12

Families of students in Baccalaureate levels (Grade 11 and 12) received on Thursday two informative letters announcing the most recent decisions taken to finish the year properly.  Among other topics, the letter mentions the way teachers will cover the pre-defined syllabus, the adjusted academic calendar, and the option to have on-campus classes, if the school receives permission from the authorities.

Families must review the personal email account communicated to the school office for regular communications.

Counseling Service

Grade 10 and 11 University Orientation

Ms Veronica is meeting virtually with the Grade 11 students who are planning to study abroad. Grade 11 parents, as well as grade 10 students and parents, are welcome to request a meeting with the same purpose as well.  Contact her at veronicacinosi@asvalencia.org.

One of the objectives of these grade 11 meetings is to help students prepare for and write a more meaningful personal statement (for British universities), letter of intention (for The Netherlands) or narrative-style personal essay (American universities). One way to enrich these writings and the college application is to have personal experiences during the summer that are connected to a student's set of interests and possible university studies. Due to the current situation, traveling to participate in summer courses is becoming complicated. For that reason, Ms Veronica suggests the following alternative: online pre-university courses.

They can be also found in the Google Drive folder Counseling Services / Different countries- University Info in the school parents’ resources site and students’ University Application Process Google Classroom.

Find below a list of resources for online summer courses

Prepare for and take standardized tests.

Discuss with Ms Veronica if you should take any of these tests and how they could benefit you.  Sign up and prepare for the tests you've decided to take
