Our offer to Primary Care Networks and Practice

We are excited to announce the launch of our offer documents to your PCN / Practice and the accompanying web page on our website - https://www.devontraininghub.co.uk/our-offer-pcns/.

Please find attached PDF versions of two booklets that we have produced:

Our Offer To Primary Care Networks – this provides details on a number of initiatives that we are developing to support the growth and development of your PCN and to give you the opportunity to let us know how we can help you going forward.

Devon’s Directory Of Training, Education and Development For Primary Care – this provides details on the wide range of things that Devon Training Hub can offer to PCNs, Practices and Individuals in Primary Care across Devon.

We are aware that the current Covid-19 situation is understandably taking up a lot of your time and priorities at present, but we are also mindful of the fact that there is a lot of deferred work landing on Practices at the same time as some of the Network DES requirements needing to be met (for example, by 31st August your workforce plan is due to be submitted). By launching these documents out to you now, we hope that it will help you to see how were are working to develop help and support for your PCNs and Practices with your training and development needs.

You will see from the ‘Offer To Primary Care Networks’ booklet and the accompanying web page, we have created an online form to allow you to easily let us know which offers you are interested in taking up and what else you may want us to help you with.

It is our intention, when things hopefully start to settle down in the coming weeks, to send out printed copies of these documents for you to display for your team members, but for now, please feel free to circulate them electronically as you feel appropriate.

If you have any comments or questions at all, please feel free to contact us.

Kind regards,

Andy

NEW VIDEO GROUP CONSULTATION TRAINING

FREE

Would your practice like to participate in this programme to support you to introduce video group clinics (VGCs)?

Here is some info and details of how to sign up for training for you and your team.

Sentinel practices (not to be confused with Sentinel CIC in Plymouth) will be first to run VGCs. They will get some additional support from The Experience Led Care Programme and our digital support partner Redmoor Health to help them to get set up and make accelerated progress with VGCs.

In return, Sentinel practices will:

Help identify priority VGC models that save time and create capacity linked to managing the primary care COVID 19 caseload and more widely;

Share what is working well and can be improved about the technology and platforms you are running video group clinics on;

Share what is working well and can be improved about the practicing this way;

Flag areas where you need us as a support team to help you find solutions and improvements that will accelerate progress.
VGCs are expected to realise the same benefits in the virtual world that group consultations deliver in the real world, namely:

Clinician time efficiencies compared to 1:1

Creating community connection

Improving clinician and patient experience compared to 1:1
At a time where many clinicians are self-isolating, VGCs will also help you make the most of clinicians and other support staff who are still able to work remotely.

Technical capability
Our digital partner is Redmoor Health. The team will advise you and ensure that you have the technology to run video group clinics. Our recommendation is Microsoft Teams. Redmoor will advise you how to get this switched on if you do not have access just now. Contact Redmoor for advice at: hello@redmoorhealth.co.uk

Preparing your workforce to deliver VGCs

The practice delivery team for VGCs includes:
Clinicians: like in real world group consultations, the 'clinician' is only present half the time (social prescribing link workers may also use VGCs to monitor sheltered people - in this context, they may only be present for part of the VGC)

Technical facilitators: because of the challenges of getting patients up and running with video technology, the facilitator in a VGC has an additional role - as well as supporting patients to prepare questions  for the clinician and to reflect on next steps after the clinician leaves, the facilitator in VGCs has to make sure patients are set up and ready to participate using their technology. This is why we have called them 'technical facilitators'. The people who take on this role do not have to be based in the practice. They do need skills in supporting people to get to grips with simple IT and also good people skills. It may be possible to use NHS volunteers, as well as practice and other out of hospital non clinical support staff

Clinic co-ordinators: this way of working will require administrative support so having people within your admin team who understand this change will be key. Those who provide admin support may also be facilitators.

Training in delivering VGCs
We recommend that all staff (clinicians, technical facilitators and administrators) to be involved attend our 2.5 hour training sessions. Practice managers may also deepen their understanding by attending (some of the sessions is devoted to planning for mobilisation) .

We are running training  sessions for Sentinel teams every week from now on. From the start of May, training will be available daily.
People only need to attend one training session.
To sign up for these 2.5 hour training sessions,

Go to www.events.england.nhs.uk

Enter “VGC” or “Sentinel” in the search box

You will find a selection of dates for briefing and training sessions

Book on your chosen training session (you will need to click “buy” even though the sessions are free to attend)
You will be sent a joining instructions email with the link to join your chosen session. If you are attending training, you will receive documents with the link that you will need to print off and have with you at the training

Deciding your focus patient group

Early VGC work within the national programme is likely to centre on proactively supporting those at high risk, including sheltered people and those living with COVID and LTCs. Where capacity allows now and as we start to move towards recovery, VGCs will also provide a very efficient way of catching up with planned reviews.

When you sign up for this programme, we will ask you to identify at least two VGC models that you want to test. There is lots of flexibility. Speaking to clinicians, we have talked about: proactive care and support of sheltered people; 6 week baby checks; repeat prescription requests for inhalers amongst others. We just want to track these so that we can touch base and see what learning is emerging

Evaluation
We are very lucky because the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences is going to b undertaking some independent evaluation of the move to VGCs. This will be led by Professor Trish Greenhalgh. We would be keen for you to get involved in this as an early pioneer. This may require a bit more admin, and it will reap many rewards for you as a team in terms of access to support with quality improvement.

If this is of interest, please contact
Georgina Craig
National Delivery Lead, Video Group Clinics (VGCs) Programme
Tel: 07879 480005
Email: georgina@elcworks.co.uk

If you have any questions on next steps, do let us know.

If not, we look forward to working with you and your team to get going with VGCs as part of your plan to cope with COVID 19.

 Best wishes
Lucy Wood RN

NHS staff offers

NHS workers have been inundated with kind offers of support from a wide range of companies – from discounted taxi rides, to dedicated supermarket shopping times, to free food and discounted products.

NHS England and NHS Improvement is working to verify these offers and bring them into a single place, so that NHS staff can take advantage of them. This list includes all of the offers that we have been able to confirm so far across supermarkets, food, transport and other miscellaneous items. The list includes details of how to access the offers, and any terms and conditions to be aware of.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and it will be updated regularly with any changes and new offers.

For further offers of help from businesses to support the health and wellbeing of NHS staff please send details to NHSI.Help4NHS@NHS.net.

Dear Colleagues

We have been contacted by a number of you asking about whether cervical screening should continue to be offered by your setting during this unprecedented time.
The message from the national team at NHS England and Improvement, correct as of 6 April, is to carry on with cervical screens where you have assessed that it is safe to do so.
It is acknowledged that invitations for cervical screening are currently still being sent out to women and that you may be contacted by some of these women asking whether they should attend for their cervical screen. As a result of the social distancing national directive, a large proportion of these women are likely not to contact you straight away to arrange an appointment for this screen. However, you will be contacted by some who are anxious to have their cervical screen. Consideration will need to be given to these women. If you are able to offer cervical screening then samples are being processed by the labs

If you are not able to offer cervical screens then the attached guidance will be useful in reducing the risk to women and the cervical screening programme. Please review the guidance and ensure that you are taking necessary steps to reduce these risks.

We are also asking for your assistance in letting us know the current situation for your setting. This can be done by answering the questions on the survey which can be found at the following link:

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=kp4VA8ZyI0umSq9Q55Ctv01ihzS2azRCsYubMkQu4exURE1LTkNYV1FKQVQwRjlPTlo5TlI5R0NaRi4u

Please be aware that as the coronavirus/COVID-19 situation evolves there may be further impact on the cervical screening pathway, and we will write to you in due course with any changes.
Thanking you in advance for your continued hard work and support. If you have any queries please contact phcontractssouthwest@nhs.net

What's it like being a helpline nurse right now?

Martin Ledwick, our head information nurse says they’ve seen a significant rise in COVID-19 related calls since March. But how are our nurses helping patients deal with their concerns during such an uncertain time? We had a chat with Martin to find out more.
Our interview with Martin

I’m Des Hall your local L&R representative. I’d love to hear how you and your Practice Nurse colleagues are doing, and especially if you need any support around Lower Limbs / Leg Ulcers etc? With that in mind I’ve taken the opportunity to include a couple of links to some new ‘Self Care’ resources that I’m sure you will find of interest. The first link is for our new Patient focussed website lrselfcare, and the second is our main website aimed at the clinician, with additional links around hosiery/wraps measuring and fitting etc

https://lrselfcare.co.uk/essential-advice/self-care-at-home

https://lohmann-rauscher.co.uk/quicklinks/self-care

Please have a look through, I’d be really interested in your thoughts?

You will see a product in the links which may be new to you – ReadyWrap? It’s an inelastic/short stretch wrap system with an equivalent action to Actico. Very easy to apply and well tolerated by patient’s especially when transitioning from bandaging; which is of special relevance in these challenging times when you may well be looking toward self-care options.

I’ve attached 2 clinical papers looking at Wraps; in the JWC Review article you can see a comparison of Static Stiffness values & Working/Resting pressures of ReadyWrap. It constitutes a fantastic alternative to and/or stepdown to selfcare for many of your current bandaging patients - who either have too big or too wet an ulcer, poor shape and/or too heavy oedema for treatment with hosiery kits. If you’d like to discuss it further please call myself or Jenny.

Look forward to hearing from you if I can be of any assistance or support. In the meantime please stay safe.
