Supporting our key workers

On Tuesday we paused for a minute’s silence to remember all the keyworkers who have passed away due to COVID-19.

More than 100 NHS and care staff have died with the virus as have many other key workers.

We remember and give thanks to our frontline heroes for all their work during this challenging time. They are working around the clock to help protect the communities they serve.

It highlights the continued importance for us all to stay at home, help stop the spread of Covid-19 and protect the NHS.

We welcome the Clap for Key workers sessions every Thursday and please do continue to show support but at a safe distance from neighbours. If you live near a hospital, please do not travel to the location show your thanks. Stay at home and on social media #ClapforCarers.

Read between the lines with Gwent Police domestic abuse campaign

Gwent Police have launched a new campaign encouraging people to #ReadBetweenTheLines and help those who may be suffering from domestic abuse.

Working together we can provide you with the help and specialist support you need to end the abuse and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

For more information about the #ReadBetweenTheLines campaign visit the Gwent Police website.

Support for cross-departmental Covid-19 strategy on domestic abuse

I fully support The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners call for a cross-departmental Covid-19 strategy on domestic abuse.

It is clear that domestic violence is already significantly under-reported in our communities and can have terrible impacts on the lives of victims, their families and their friends. Home should be a place of safety, but for many it is not.

The national lockdown means that we expect incidents to increase and I would urge anyone experiencing it not to suffer in silence, but to speak out. The Chief Constable Pam Kelly and I have been very clear that Gwent Police, and our partner agencies, are here to help.

The UK Government must provide additional funding to help the specialist agencies deal with the challenges that they are facing in offering advice and support to keep victims safe.

Covid-19: your questions answered

Quite a few people have asked what they should do if they witness people breaking social distancing rules.

Over the past four weeks Gwent Police have been responding to intelligence received by the public. If you witness antisocial behaviour, or groups gathering in your community they want to hear from you.

Gwent Police is currently experiencing a huge volume of calls and messages to its control room regarding Covid-19 and these will be prioritised according to the threat, risk and harm that they pose.

To help Gwent Police deal with the demand please contact them via the social media desk using Facebook and Twitter if possible. If this is not possible call 101.

Please only call 999 if there is an emergency, or a threat to life.

Gwent Police officers are out and about in our communities and if you do have a concern, please do not be afraid to speak with them directly as they are there to help.

To see other responses to these questions please follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Here is handy ‘how to’ to help you make a rainbow for your windows to say thank you to Gwent Police officers and other key workers.
