Hello <<First Name>>,

There is so much to celebrate today!

Today is May Day, also known as International Workers' Day. A day when the international labour movement celebrates the contributions of labour and the working class to our society. Today, we are also celebrating Ontario First Responder Day! To those on the frontlines of emergency response, I want to thank you for contributions to our safety. Finally, I would like to wish Doctors a Happy Ontario Doctors Day! The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is urging people across the province to "shine a light" to show their gratitude for health care professionals battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

One day is not enough to celebrate the contributions of these individuals, but I am happy any time we can highlight the contributions they make to our health, safety and security.

Today's latest update comes with news of some initial steps being taken to re-open a sliver of the economy starting next week. As of May 4th, some business such as garden centres, car washes and landscaping services can resume operation under strict health and safety conditions. This is an encouraging development, but we need to remain vigilant about ensuring worker safety is respected. For the latest on this issue, please read the government press release HERE.

On the COVID-19 testing front, the news is not as positive. The Government continues to fall behind testing targets on a consistent basis. Analysis done between April 17-29 shows that the Ford Government has missed its own targets by over 100,000 tests. As we look to re-open the economy, public health experts are indicating that testing will need to increase dramatically to avoid a resurgence of the virus. The Ontario NDP Caucus and I will continue to pressure the government to make this a priority.

There is a great deal of local news today as well, so please continue down to the community news section.

As always, my office is here to help. Please call at 416-243-7984, or email us at fhassan-co@ndp.on.ca.

Take care, stay home, and wash your hands.

Best Regards,

Statement from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on International Workers’ Day

QUEEN’S PARK — NDP Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath released the following statement to mark International Workers’ Day and First Responders Day in Ontario:

Today, as Ontarians join communities across the globe in celebrating International Workers’ Day, it is more important than ever to show our thanks and solidarity to working folks.

During these incredibly difficult times, we are all especially thankful for the public health staff, health care workers, grocery store staff, pharmacy workers, transit drivers, truckers, supply chain workers, manufacturing teams, essential construction workers, first responders, and so many more of our everyday heroes. That’s why here in Ontario, we are also celebrating First Responders Day today

All Ontarians are so thankful to these crucial workers for all that they do to keep people safe and healthy, get food and medicine into people’s homes, and keep our province running. In communities across the province and the globe, people have finally come to realize how critical these working folks really are. But, sadly – and shamefully – many of these heroes are among the lowest paid workers in our society. Some have to work three jobs to make ends meet. Some haven’t had proper health and safety protections. Many don’t have pensions and health benefits.

While there is no doubt that the risks have been greater and the pressure more intense these last few weeks, the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t make these workers more valuable – it showed the world how incredibly valuable they have always been.
Let’s make sure they get the wages and working conditions they’ve always deserved. And let’s make sure they’re never taken for granted again.

Community News:

ATTENTION: McDonald's Canada has announced that an employee from its location at 2 Ingram Drive, just off Keele Street between Lawrence and Eglinton, has tested positive for COVID-19. The employee in question is said to have worked on April 28 from 6:05 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Staffers who worked with the infected employee have been asked to self-quarantine and anyone who may have visited during this time are asked to take direction from Ontario Public Health.
The community survey for the TDSB Pupil Accommodation Review of York Memorial C.I. and George Harvey C.I. closes today. Feedback received will be included in the staff's final report to the Board of Trustees in June. Fill out the survey HERE.
Lane reductions and concrete pouring are currently taking place at Caledonia Station. Drivers should expect delays. There will be no impact on pedestrian paths or TTC stops in the area.

We are proud to support the Ontario Health Coalition Day of action. The are calling on the Ontario Government to institute concrete measures to deal with the spread of COVID-19. Take part on social media using the #FixLTCFord hashtag.
