We send our support to you!

Many of you have asked us: What does the Covid-19 pandemic look like in Zambia? How is it impacting our work?

To our great relief, the pandemic has not affected Zambia -or the region as a whole- in the way that some media and vocal philanthropists had predicted.  Zambia's government took swift action at the end of March to prohibit large gatherings and reduce the number of foreign visitors.
As we send you this newsletter, Zambia (population ~ 17 million) has confirmed 267 cases, and 7 deaths as a result of Covid-19.
In accordance with government protocols, Bakashana closed our Resource Centre classes in March, about a month and half before schedule. All schools were closed and the girls who board with us were sent home. Currently, we are still offering services from our health facility and have held a couple of small workshops. Zambian schools are scheduled to re-open for those in National Examination classes (grade 7,9, and 12) on the first of June. We will await notice from the Ministry of Health as we decide how best to keep our Bakashana family members safe as we move forward with our programs.
Nurse Elizabeth continues to help Mamas (and Papas and Brothers and Sisters) procure necesarry family planning and other sexual and reproductive health services during this time.
Our work would not be possible without your generosity over the years. During this uncertain time we are sending all of our love, hope, and positivity your way. Know that your Bakashana family is thinking of you and please reach out and let us know how we might offer you support.
