We are excited to announce the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Service District (MSD) is sending important information through an email newsletter. We encourage all community members in the MSD service area to sign up to receive information about your community and the services provided by the MSD. The service areas include five Metro Townships (Copperton, Emigration Canyon, Kearns, Magna and White City), the Town of Brighton, and the unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County. The Magna Bridge Project
COMPLETED APRIL 2020
We are pleased to announce the Magna Bridge Replacement project was completed in April. The project is a joint partnership between the MSD and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT).
Through a contract with the MSD, Salt Lake County engineers and construction crews replaced two bridges in Magna with new structures that have a service life of 75 years. The bridges are located at:
- 9200 West near the Kennecott gate
- 3500 South near 8900 West
There were significant structural deficiencies on both bridges. The double tee beams were in poor condition, spalls created exposed areas and some prestressing strands were severed (see photos). Spalls are flakes of a material that break off a larger solid body. Prestressing strands are twisted steel cables composed of high strength steel wires and are used in construction to relieve stress.
Lead engineer Crystal Hulbert said this project had a tight budget, so to reduce construction cost, the team implemented value engineering during the design process. The project also had a tight schedule because the canal needed to be opened by April for the flow of irrigation water. The successful bridge project started in 2019 and was completed by the April deadline. The new bridges are stronger and safer.

Salt Lake County's Plan to Reopen Businesses
May 1, 2020. Salt Lake County (SLCo) has worked with the State, other counties, the MSD, municipalities and the business community to develop action plans that will get employees back to work and residents back into the marketplace.
SLCo has been busy implementing the orange phase of the Utah Leads Together (ULT) 2.0 plan. You can find specific information related to business guidelines at https://slco.org/together/.
The plan includes opening some of the businesses in the county, including restaurants and food services, gym and fitness, personal services and events and entertainment.
The county is committed to balancing the critical needs of both community health and economic stability of its residents. With the community’s support and cooperation with social distancing, the county is seeing great progress. They are able to cautiously relax some of the business restrictions that have been in place.
As we start the orange phase of ULT, we encourage all to be vigilant in keeping the social distancing and hygiene standards that will help us recover at a faster pace.

SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT & REPAIR PROJECT
|

|
|
The MSD is replacing sections of sidewalk in the Willow Creek area in unincorporated Salt Lake County. The sidewalks in this area are due for a facelift, and the work crews are replacing approximately 300 feet of new concrete in certain sections. This sidewalk project follows a recent project where crews removed tripping hazards by sanding down the pavement..
Salt Lake County trucks and construction crews will be in the area near Escalante Dr. and Rubidoux Rd. The project cost is approximately $7,500.

MAGNA MAGNITUDE 5.7 EARTHQUAKE
AND 1,780 AFTERSHOCKS

We were all surprised early on the morning of March 18th when we felt the 5.7 magnitude earthquake centered in Magna, UT. Since then, there have been 1,780 aftershocks, at least five them above magnitude 4.0. Our residents in Magna feel most of these aftershocks.
We want the Magna and surrounding community members to know that we understand how hard it has been these past weeks and thank you for your strength, courage, and patience as earthquakes continue to rattle your homes. We also want to thank Mayor Peay and the Magna Councilmembers for their work, dedication and support during the aftermath of the earthquake.
Our MSD building inspectors and engineers have been checking many homes for earthquake damage.They have also surveyed the damage to the businesses located on Main Main. The Coronavirus has made this difficult because we want to adhere to the Governor's guidelines and keep everyone safe. We thank Magna residents for understanding these constraints.
The MSD Planning & Development Department quickly responded to the aftermath of the earthquake and developed an online Damage Assessment Form to report damage and submit photos. So far, to date, we have received 448 online forms. Salt Lake County was so impressed by our online form, they began using it as well for anyone else in the county to report any damage. Big Bear Park is a fun, family-oriented park with spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountain Range. The park, located in a White City Metro Township neighborhood, features a large bear statue and cute bear playground equipment. The innovative playground includes spinners, slides and swings. The park has a very nice, covered picnic facility (135 seats), sports courts, baseball field, two lighted tennis courts, volleyball, horseshoes, shuffleboard and paved walkway/jogging path.

Salt Lake County parks and trails remain open to the public. Some amenities may be closed due to overcrowding and the inability to maintain six feet of social distancing. Restrooms are closed.
Be Park Smart - Social Distancing in Parks
Playgrounds are closed, and team sports, including pickup games, are prohibited. At this time, outdoor sports courts and fields at county parks remain open for individual use and for individuals that reside in the same household.
If you plan to visit your local park, please follow these tips to do so safely:
• Follow the CDC’s guidelines for personal hygiene and stay home if you are feeling ill or exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
• Observe the CDC’s minimum social distancing recommendation of keeping 6 feet from other people at all times — whether you choose to walk, run, bike or hike.
• Restrooms are closed, so plan ahead and wash your hands before and after visiting and bring hand sanitizer.
• Pack out what you pack in to help maintain the safety of park staff.
