Hi foodie friends and home cooks!
We hope you are staying safe and doing okay! Thank you to those of you who ordered our veggie bag through Number 1 Sons last week; they sold out very quickly and we really appreciate your support. Check the Number 1 Sons online store again Tuesday morning if you'd like to order for next week!
If you can make it to Brandywine, we
will have a special pre-order early spring veggie bag and seedlings available for pick up at P.A. Bowen Farmstead on Saturday, May 2nd, from 10am-1pm. Please see below for details on how to pre-order.

For our customers who live near Greenbelt, we also wanted to remind you that we've added the Greenbelt Farmers Market as one of our Veggie Subscription Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) pick up locations! This is the best way for you to get a regular supply of Dicot Farm veggies all season long.

  • We are still planning to be at GFM on May 10th for opening day, and the first date for CSA pick up there will be May 17th. The GFM team is working with the county and others to ensure we can operate a safe market - check the GFM website and social media over the next few weeks for any updates.
  • We plan to still sell items individually, but if you'd like to have a prepaid and prepacked Dicot Farm veggie bag ready to go, signing up for our CSA is a great option!
  • We have weekly, every other week, and summer-only options. Please check out our website for more info and see below for sign-up instructions.

Finally, scroll down to read about what's been going on on the farm! While this last month has seemed very different in many ways for us, it's also seemed very much the same in terms of planting, dealing with nature, and frantically trying to finish some projects we should have completed in the winter.

Thank you for supporting your local farmers and producers!

  • Please sign up and pay for the May 2nd veggie bag and/or seedlings in advance by going to this link in our online store: https://dicotfarm.square.site/shop/6
  • The bag is $20 and will include at least 6 different items depending on how the harvest goes this week. These items might include: lettuce mix, spicy salad mix, turnips, bok choy, radishes, spinach, chard, kale, and/or pea shoots.
  • We have seedlings available that you can also purchase in our online store: https://dicotfarm.square.site/shop/6
    • $3 seedlings include broccolini, spinach, eggplant, basil, dill, parsley (flat leaf), cilantro, mint (common), sage, oregano, and thyme. We also have four varieties of hot pepper seedlings: jalapeno, fish, habanero, and cayenne.
    • Seedlings come in Certified Organic locally made potting mix in compostable peat pots that can be planted directly into the soil.
    • We also have $5 larger basil plants in 6" pots and several varieties of $6 tomato plants in 6" pots available. They are in the same potting mix but the containers are plastic.
    • Seedlings should be added to the same online cart purchase as the spring veggie bag.
    • You do not need to purchase a veggie bag in order to purchase seedlings.
  • Deadline: Purchase online by midnight on Wednesday, April 29th so that we can plan our harvest! We have limited quantities and our past veggie bags have sold out before the deadline. Seedlings can be purchased until noon on Friday, May 1st, but may also sell out sooner.
  • We are only fulfilling pre-orders made online. We will not have additional items for sale and are not accepting any payments in person on 5/2.
We will set up outside of the store under a tent and all orders will be pre-packed and ready for quick pick up. Please stay 6 feet away from staff and other customers and make sure to wear a mask. For more info on our COVID-19 planning and response, please go to https://dicotfarm.com/covid-19.

The P.A. Bowen store remains open so you can also stock up on other local products. You can also find some of our veggies in their fridges until they sell out. Customers in the store are currently limited to 5 at a time. P.A. Bowen will post any updates to their store hours or policies on Facebook.

Farm Update!
We can't believe April is almost over! It's been a very productive month and we're actually almost caught up with our planting and other plans - which isn't always the case with us! A lot of being caught up has to do with our awesome team this year. We'll introduce you to them in future emails, but Erin, Max, and Violet all started as new employees with us at the beginning of the month and have proven to be exceptional farmers so far.

Thanks to their hard work, we were able to expand and improve our deer fence. Deer were our biggest obstacle last year, since they figured out how to get around our previous electric fence and ate pretty much all of our 2019 okra and beans, and almost destroyed the sweet potatoes. We knew that 2020 had to be different, so we not only expanded the fence to surround a few more acres but we also completely covered it in 8 foot tall metal woven wire that, from what we hear from farmer friends and agricultural experts, is really the best prevention method to keep deer from eating your veggies. See the photo below.

We also planted SEVENTY hundred-foot long beds over the last two months with their help. From bok choy to tomatoes, we are now working to ensure these plants stay protected from insects, are free from weeds, and are not too cold or too hot - which has been a little difficult given a very warm March and a fairly cold April. But so far no major losses. Now back to planting...we have 60 more hundred-foot beds that need to be planted in May!
