       "Newsletter for May 2020"

A postcard from home...at work

"Back then, staring out the window used to be a moments luxury...not an action plan for the whole day..."

It's one of these rare days when I can actually be bothered procrastinating, which is why I am sitting staring out the window and writing this newsletter to you. Seriously though, I have to be thankful that I still have access to my studio and my work. Not many of the artists I know who are in lockdown do.

It's interesting how those of us who are still able to make art have responded to the life changing, even civilization changing Covid-19 event of the last few months.

You may have seen Anthony Gormley's bleak clay figurines, Tracey Emin's online diaries for White Cube Gallery (UK),  Banksy's stencilled rats causing chaos in his bathroom ("my wife hates it when I work from home") or David Hockney's sunny iPad drawings from his garden in France.

And I have just recently realised that the mezzotint I sent to the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibition earlier this year has a bio-hazard symbol as part of the image. I had put that piece aside for them at the end of the last year, before this coronavirus had gone pandemic. Prophetic? Coincidence?

Trying not to be too introspective, I wonder if my interest in science will be rekindled by all of this. Probably, although as an artist, it often takes me quite a while to distil experiences that influence my work. We'll have to wait and see.

But for now, I have posted two new works along with the bio-hazard symbol detail from that mezzotint on my blog. And as always, I have written a little bit about them for those of you who ask. Have a look here.

NEWS NEWS NEWS

My mezzotint with the bio-hazard symbol "Where Hope Still Burns" is at the RSA Annual Exhibition online and runs until 31 May 2020. Click here to see it.

As the Glasgow Print Studio (GPS) is currently closed, some of the staff, led by our wonderful workshop manager Claire Forsyth, have been laser cutting much needed PPE's for frontline Health and Emergency Service workers.

"Hope in Shifting Shadows" (that's the big mezzotint I started last year in Jerusalem) has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in the UK which, although postponed, will hopefully be rescheduled for later this year.

In the meanwhile, stay positive, even in the face of what seems like a bleak outlook. Keeping a positive attitude might not make stuff easier, but it does make stuff possible.

Stay safe, stay sane.
Stuart
