Watch Former Ms. Wheelchair Hawaii use Beach Trax at Sunset

Share this special moment with Sarah as she uses Beach Trax to get close to the water for a sunset on Maui

Beach Trax Featured in the New Mobility Magazine

The April issue of New Mobility, the magazine for active wheelchair users, features an informative article on gear and tactics for navigating sand at the beach. Author Jessica Farthing of Savannah, Georgia shares that her inspiration for writing the piece came from personal experience. Jessica's husband Paul is an incomplete quadriplegic, and summer beach days have proven frustrating due to the lack of good options to access the sand. "[Paul would] always be up on the boardwalk or in some area away from the action," she says.

In researching beach access products, Jessica and Paul found Beach Trax. Excited to try out the user-friendly solution, they purchased their own set of mats. Here's what Jessica had to say after using Beach Trax to access beautiful Tybee Island: "Paul and I loved, loved, loved the Beach Trax. Finally, we have a way to get out on our long stretch of soft sand at Tybee Island without depending on others. True independence!"

In Jessica's article, she included the story of how Dave Foster of Del Mar was able to check his Beach Trax as luggage on the plane to his vacation home in Costa Rica. To read the full story, click the button below.

South African Nonprofit Wins Beach Trax Contest

A woman in her wheelchair wearing rainbow pants, a blonde woman wearing a camo jacket, a young man wearing a black jacket and holding the South African flag, and a woman wearing a hat and sunglasses all smile for a photo at the beach. Beach Trax beach access mats are folded up in the photo.

In conjunction with the 2020 AmpSurf ISA World Para Surfing Championships, Access Trax and Surf Dog Ricochet teamed up to giveaway 10 Beach Trax accessible beach mats. The contest was open to any nonprofit or adaptive surf team that had an athlete participating in the surf championships at La Jolla Shores March 11-14. More than 10 nonprofits competed to take home the prize. Teams earned votes by encouraging their supporters to vote online once a day during the voting period.

On Saturday March 14th, the lucky winner was revealed on the last day of the epic world para surfing championships. Team Made for More South Africa received an outstanding number of votes. In the photo above, Surf Dog Ricochet and Access Trax CEO Kelly celebrate with a few members of the South African adaptive surf team. They were able to take home all 10 Beach Trax panels easily on the plane back to Durban, South Africa. The carrying strap system makes transporting Beach Trax a breeze. Congratulations, Made for More SA! Well deserved.

Other teams nominated include AmpSurf, Adaptive Maui, the SFL Junior Adaptive Surf Team, the Torrey Pines Surf Ministry, One More Wave, the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and Life Rolls On. Every team is certainly deserving of a beach access tool like Beach Trax for their programs. If you'd like to help Access Trax fundraise for a specific nonprofit, please don't hesitate to reach out. We love partnering with our community.

Blog Post: Beach Wheelchair vs Beach Mat

A man uses a beach wheelchair which has 2 wheels in the back, 1 in the front. Two women push him in the chair at the beach.
A woman unfolds a grey Beach Trax pathway at the beach.

What is a Beach Wheelchair?

A beach wheelchair is a special type of wheelchair that is designed to help people with physical disabilities move over sand. Standard wheelchair wheels aren’t meant for sand and normally sink. This makes a fun beach day simply impossible. To keep from sinking, beach wheelchair wheels are very wide and large, increasing the surface area. Ideally, they also have good traction. There are two main types of beach wheelchairs: power (battery powered wheels) and manual (no power).

Wheelchair Mat for the Beach

If you aren’t loving the cost or functionality of a beach wheelchair, there is another option for beach access! A portable beach mat is a great solution that allows you to stay in the comfort and safety of your own wheelchair. Sometimes transferring into a beach wheelchair simply isn’t safe or practical. A beach mat provides a stable walkway that allows you to access the beach with family and friends. Plus, a beach mat can be used by multiple people at once!

Envision this scenario: you are going to your favorite local beach on a hot summer day with your family.  You already have the portable access mat stored in the trunk of your car, so you’re ready to go. When you arrive, a family member carries the beach access mat from the parking lot to the sand. As you wheel up to the boardwalk, the pathway is already laid out on the sand for you! Your 2 kids run behind you as you wheel out to your ideal hang out spot. The umbrella gets set up and you transfer to the beach blanket to catch some rays and watch your kids build a sand castle. When needed, you can wheel yourself to the beach bathrooms because your pathway is still set up. You notice other people using the pathway, but it doesn’t bother you one bit- you’re happy to share accessibility for all!
