In mid-March, the early days of Chicago's COVID-19 outbreak, older adults with multiple chronic conditions didn't think the disease would affect them and reported not changing their behaviors, according to the results of a Northwestern Medicine study. Michael Wolf, PhD, MPH, who led this study and is the director of IPHAM's Center for Applied Health Research on Aging, is the guest on an episode of Feinberg's Breakthroughs podcast to explain the results and how public health interventions are needed to protect vulnerable populations.

The National Institutes of Health has issued an RFA that may be of interest to IPHAM faculty. The purpose is to support investigative and collaborative research focused on understanding the long-term effects of natural and/or human-made disasters on health care systems serving health disparity populations in communities in the U.S., including the U.S. territories. NIH-designated health disparity populations include racial and ethnic minorities (Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asians, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders), sexual and gender minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, and underserved rural populations.

As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts daily life across the globe, it’s also made an enormous impact on health systems and scientific investigations. Clinicians are faced with the challenge of caring for a huge increase in patients with the novel coronavirus while digesting newly emerging information about treatments and co-morbidities. At the same time, both short- and long-term measures are necessary to preserve scientific integrity of clinical trials and experiments, and the emergence of an unknown pathogen is a stark reminder of the need for fundamental molecular science.
According to several recent editorials published by Feinberg faculty, there are variety of ways to improve care delivery, interpret new information and maintain ongoing clinical trials and experiments.
