Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College
I am pleased to report on a very positive and productive two weeks with students back on site. The boys pleasure at being back, catching up with friends, classmates and teachers has been obvious. This reinforces the role that schools have to enable social interaction as well as enable teaching and learning. With over 90% of our boys on site the tone has been very positive and settled.
The focus in the classroom has been on engaging all the boys in their learning, ensuring those who have fallen behind during lockdown catch up and grow their knowledge and understanding of the content delivered online. Our assessment schedule has been extended to support all students to achieve with the majority of NCEA internal assessments now due on the last day of this term, Friday 3rd July. This will enable our senior boys to spread the pressure of completing assessments out over the remaining 5 weeks. The students have adhered to the MOE Health and Safety requirements for schools under Alert Level 2 whilst enjoying the ability to catch up with mates socially and sharing in physical activity, and class activities.
I remind all parents of the requirements under Alert Level 2 MOE guidelines that parents / supporters / spectators do not come on the school site. If you need to come on site you are required to sign in at our front office to enable contact tracing. All parents should remain in their vehicles when they drop off or pick up their sons. This ensures our school bubble, safety and hygiene protocols are met.
Planning is well underway to get our sporting programme back on track to ensure our boys get to experience many of the opportunities we offer here at Tauranga Boys' College. Unfortunately, under MOE guidelines, the same requirements need to be met as we begin the sports programme and we cannot permit spectators on site until Alert Level 1 due to the inability to meet contact tracing requirements. Therefore, NO spectators are permitted on the school grounds - parents are to drop off and pick up their sons and remain in their vehicles. Please support us by adhering to this request to enable us to begin training and trials and understand our coaches and managers will be busy with your son and not to be distracted from training and trials to ask you to leave our sidelines. We thank you for this imposition in advance and like you, cannot wait to have you join us on the side of the sports field in the not too distant future. Currently our plans are to open our site to spectators and parents when Level 1 commences or such time as the MOE informs the school that we do not need to contact trace. We are optimistic this will be by 22nd June.
We understand at this time that some of our families may be experiencing significant financial pressure due to COVID- 19. Tauranga Boys' College dooes not want any boy to miss out on the opportunity to play sport for the school due to financial difficulty.
The Titans Trust would like to help families who are in need of some financial assistance so that your boy may play sport and they have set up a generous Sport Support Fund. For you to access this you need to follow these steps:
- Email sport@tbc.school.nz
- State the Sport / Team you are involved with and the subscription fee
- Identify briefly your reason for support, either loss of job or personal financial circumstances.
The Sport Support Package will guarantee payment for the subscription fee i.e. Rugby Junior $70, Senior $90, Football $80-$110, Basketball $120, Hockey $140 (approximate costs). The Sport Support package will also consider payments for Tournaments and inter-school games. As a school we respect the fact that it’s often hard to ask for help but if it makes a difference for your son then I urge you to contact us and assure you this will be treated as a confidential matter.
Enjoy the Queen's Birthday weekend with whānau and friends.

ARTS AT THE COLLEGE
Planning is underway to ensure our boys get the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents in the many Arts and Cultural activities we offer here at the college. The NZ Super 8 schools cultural festival which incorporated a wide range of Arts disciplines was to be held here at Tauranga Boys' College but had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. Currently, it is proposed that the Cultural Festival will be split between three of the Super 8 schools in order to meet current Health & Safety guidelines on gatherings and contact tracing of spectators. Details will be shared with you once they are finalised.
Arts Events planned so far:
Rockquest Video submission - due 22 July
Sheilah Winn Video submission - 15th June
UN Speech competition - online judging in August
Arts / Cultural Showcase Toi-Tū - Monday 25 - Saturday 29 August, a showcase of Tauranga Boys' College Arts / Cultural activities across Tauranga Moana (details to be confirmed)

2019 CENTURIONS
A significant achievement that we recognise is that of "Centurion". This term is used to describe those boys who have gained 100% of their Achievement Standard / Unit Standard Credits in their NCEA Qualification in one year, provided this is greater than 80 Credits are Level 1 and 60 Credits at Levels 2 and 3. Those achieving Level 1 Centurion status are called Bronze Centurions, Level 2 Silver Centurions and Level 3 Gold Centurions. This is recognised with the presentation of a badge and an appropriately coloured bar showing achievement at Bronze, Silver or Gold level.
|
|
|
This is an outstanding achievement recognising diligence and application to studies throughout the whole year with both internal assessments and external exams. Centurion status is a goal a large number of our boys aspire to, and it is really encouraging to be able to recognise boys who have achieved this status in 2019.
Students currently in Year 13 who achieve NCEA Level 3 prior to week 1 of Term 4 and pass 100% of the credits they are entered in, will be recognised before the end of the school year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OLD BOY SAM CANE
Sam Cane was named as the new captain of the All Blacks in early May. Sam succeeds Kieran Read who retired from the All Blacks after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Sam moved from Reporoa to Tauranga Boys' College in 2009 and Mr Mangan recalls "He was a standout, exceptional. It was written all over him that he was going to go places, without any doubt."

With a heightened awareness of health and well-being due to COVID-19, I share information from the BOP District Health Board below relating to Rheumatic Fever prevention and HPV immunisation that needs your attention.
|
|
HPV Immunisation
High School Catch Up Programme
Our senior boys will continue to be offered the opportunity to be involved in the government funded HPV (human papilloma virus) immunisation programme. Many students will have had their HPV vaccine at Intermediate, however many also missed out. We began this catch up programme in term 3 last year and continued in term one 2020. Due to school closure as a result of COVID-19, this programme was delayed but we will be offering this again as soon as possible.
Some facts about HPV:
- HPV is a virus that causes HPV cancers in both males and females
- Nearly 8/10 people will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime
- HPV vaccination is being very effective at protecting against this virus
- It is now FREE for males up to age 26
A consent form is required to be filled in and signed by a parent /caregiver if under 16 years old prior to the vaccination taking place, however, all boys are strongly encouraged to discuss this with parents / caregivers despite being allowed to self consent over 16 years of age. The consent form contains detailed information and advice.
If you have any queries, please contact one of our school health nurses: Vicki Keenan or Annalise Thomas.

RHEUMATIC FEVER - BOP District Health Board Advice
Rheumatic Fever is a serious but preventable illness. It mainly affects Māori and Pacific children and young people (aged 4 to 19 years), especially if they have other family members who have had rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever starts with a sore throat that is known as 'strep throat' - a throat infection. Most sore throats get better on their own after about four days. But if strep throat is not treated with antibiotics it can cause rheumatic fever in at-risk children and young people. All sore throats in Māori and Pacific children and young people (aged 4 to 19 years) who are living in the Bay of Plenty need to be checked.
Ministry of Health key messages for Rheumatic Fever prevention:
- A sore throat can lead to Rheumatic Fever if it's left untreated. Rheumatic Fever is very serious and can cause heart damage.
- Every time your child has a sore throat it could be serious. Don't ignore it - take them to a doctor or nurse straight away to get it checked. Call Healthline on 0800 611 116 to find out more.
- If your child is given antibiotics, it's important they take them for the whole 10 days, even if they feel better, to stop the sore throat turning into Rheumatic Fever.
Skin infections are also common in tamariki and have links to Rheumatic fever. If left untreated, skin infections can lead to serious health problems. These infections can affect the blood, kidneys, bones, joints, lymph nodes and brain resulting in people needing to be hospitalised for treatment.

Tauranga Boys' College
Old Boys' Association
The Tauranga Boys' College Old Boys' Association began in 2008 when we celebrated our 50th Jubilee. Since that time we have developed an Old Boys' database to which is sent a newsletter every couple of months detailing what is going on at school as well as with our Old Boys scattered all around the globe. Many of our students have family members who have previously attended Tauranga Boys' College and it would be great to have their details on our Database too. If you are an Old Boy or know Old Boys who are not on our database then please email details to Rob Leslie on r.leslie@tbc.school.nz who is the Staff Representative on the Old Boys Committee. If you are on Facebook the TBC Old Boys have a page there as well which you may find of interest.
