Since its beginning in 2012, Giving Tuesday, has grown into a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.” Traditionally held at Thanksgiving time, a new "Giving Tuesday Now" (GTN) event will take place Tuesday, May 5 as a response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Nonprofits across the world are holding unique events and calling on supporters to give anything they can to help the organizations stay afloat and continue their valuable work.

With a mission to protect the ocean through science and advocacy and inspiring environmental stewardship, Pacific Whale Foundation invites you to support this #GivingTuesdayNow Mini Auction and online fundraising event. Now observing its' 40th year, the nonprofit organization has been researching and taking action on behalf of whales, dolphins, and other marine species that populate the waters of Maui Nui and beyond. You can support the Foundation this special Giving Tuesday by visiting www.pacificwhale.org/auction, where you will find items such as artwork, Lilly Pulitzer reusable water bottles, commemorative shirts, dinnerware, $5 donation options and more. The event begins at 12:00am HST, Tuesday, May 5th and will end at 11:55pm HST Tuesday, May 12.

Now Is A Great Time To Give: New Charitable Rules Incentivize Generosity During COVID-19

As part of the CARES Stimulus Act, Congress decided to jump-start charitable giving by offering taxpayers a charitable deduction for up to $300 in donations. This deduction is available to the 85% of Americans who don’t itemize their returns. If you are in this group, please note that your deduction can apply only to your 2020 tax return for donations made in 2020.

Read more in Forbes Magazine HERE, where you will find the following highlights:
  • According to Section 2205, there is now no limit to the deductions you can take for charitable contributions if you itemize (list out) your contributions (used to be 60% of AGI was deductible, now it’s 100%)
  • You can also donate more than 100% of your AGI, but it won’t all be counted in 2020. Just for this year, you’ll be able to donate more than 100% of your AGI and let that additional amount be counted as a carry-forward (at 60% AGI again) for the next 5 years.
  • Less well-off donors benefit, too. Taxpayers can now take a deduction for up to $300 in charitable contributions if they don’t itemize on their 2020 tax form. This is a flip from the previous rule that required itemization for a tax break. 85% of taxpayers won’t itemize anymore because of the 2017 increase to the standard deduction…but they can now get the added (up to) $300 deduction for charity giving without itemizing.
  • CARES Act raises the annual cash gift limit for corporations from 10% to 25% of corporate taxable income.
  • Taxpayers who donate food to their local food pantry can claim the value of that food on their taxes.
  • On a larger scale, if you’re a restaurant with an income of $100,000, and you donate $25,000 worth of food inventory, you can reduce your business’s taxable income to $75,000. And if you’re able to donate more than 25% of your AGI — let’s say $50,000 — you’ll still only be able to write off $25,000 this year, and the additional $25,000 will carry over to the next year (where the tax deduction limit will likely return to 15% of AGI).
If you can, please arrange for a monthly donation to provide steady, reliable support for initiatives including our Keiki Whalewatch Program, RETHINK, Humpback Whale Research in Hawaii, Ecuador and Australia and more. Even a gift of $10 per month will make a HUGE difference.

PWF IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Nearly 7 weeks ago, PacWhale Eco-Adventures halted its ecotour operations in accordance with what has now become one of the defining global health crises of our time. Following a period of paid, temporary emergency sick leave into mid-April, the majority of staff were furloughed for just two weeks before a plan was solidified to resume their full-time employment and pay. Upon learning of this news, Assistant Port Captain Alyssa Moser shared the following:

"I want to extend my gratitude and express my appreciation for all of the time and effort that you’ve dedicated to our PWF 'ohana during this challenging time. I cannot imagine all of the tough decisions and sleepless nights you all have had. Trying to strike a balance with all of the different responsibilities you hold is incredibly complex, so thank you for walking the fine line between keeping us safe, running a business and trying to hold us all together. You're doing a great job, just wanted to let you know I'm cheering for you! I'm thankful to have a leadership team that I can be proud of during this time. Thank you for taking care of us."

In celebration of 2020’s 50th anniversary Earth Day, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of PacWhale Eco-Adventures' parent nonprofit, Pacific Whale Foundation, ecotour staff were asked to devote their upcoming work time to local nonprofits. Keep an eye out for us in the community as we develop PacWhale's Kōkua Project - we are in this together!

THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is affecting all life forms on the planet, from the tiniest plankton to the biggest whales that traverse our vast oceans. Pacific Whale Foundation is committed to investigating, researching and fighting the key stressors whales and dolphins face in this changing world. We are also always finding new ways to lessen our impact wherever possible. Thank you for allowing us to continue this important work!
Enjoy the tips and tricks the PWF team shared in celebration of Earth Day to reduce and RETHINK your use of single-use plastics.
5 DOLLAR FUNDRAISER
We are fortunate to have an online, regularly engaged audience of more than 250,000 individuals. Because now is not the time to be asking for major gifts, we're imagining a moment where each supporter simply donated $5. This would allow our Research, Education and Conservation programs to thrive through this uncertain time. If you are able, we hope you join this exciting vision of ours:

RECENT VIRTUAL OFFERINGS
Enjoy this PWF Webinar where Chief Biologist Stephanie Stack hosts an interview with Elsa Cabrera and Barbara Galletti from Centro de Conservación Cetacea (CCC) in Chile. Pacific Whale Foundation has been a financial supporter of their Alfaguara Project for over ten years. Recently, we spoke with this inspirational pair of conservationists as they discussed their efforts to study a new species of blue whale, how human activities are affecting whales in Chile, and the importance of whale poop!

PWF CONSERVATION ACTIVITY
This RETHINK activity utilizes materials that you may have laying around the house to create your very own night sky. Inspired by a recent meteor shower here in Maui, Hawaii, Shelby and Lila attempt to recreate their stargazing experience while UPCYCLING a pasta sauce jar and some plastic bottle caps.

We also explore the ideas of CONSTELLATIONS and PLANETS.

A CONSTELLATION is very simply a group of stars that form a recognizable pattern and a PLANET simply orbits a star (our planet Earth orbits the Sun!) and is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity. The amount of stars and planets that can be seen from where you live depends on many things, including how much light pollution is around and where you physically are on our planet.

This project has the flexibility to be made using all different kinds of materials as substitutes. The intention of this project is to create holes (stars) that your light within your jar can shine through to create your own night sky. Enjoy!
