IAAP Webinar Series on Accessible Remote Working Environments
Cities can be both smart and accessible in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As cities leverage tech and date more than ever, the Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology (PEAT), the Global initiative for Inclusive ICTs (G3ict) and the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), a division of G3ict, are offering a series of free webinars as resources to support remote working accessible environments.

G3ict, Smart Cities for All Collaborates with World Blind Union for Webinar on Smart Cities
G3ict, Smart Cities for All (SC4A), IAAP, World Blind Union (WBU), and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) collaborated for a webinar on Smart Cities for All: Leveraging Technology and Data for More Inclusive Cities Worldwide. It focused on disability inclusion in global frameworks informing urban development, how Smart Cities can become accessible for all, and how the smartness of cities can be assessed and benchmarked. Speaker included Hannes Juhlin Lagrelius, Program Officer, Global Program for Inclusive and Accessible Urban Development, WBU; James Thurston, Vice President for Global Strategy and SC4A Managing Director, G3ict; Shivani Gupta, Founder, AccessAbility India; and Federico Batista Poitier, Policy Officer, UCLG.

Digital Technologies and the COVID-19 Pandemic #BeyondTheOutbreak
G3ict participated in the 5th Live Learning meeting was again hosted by UCLG, Metropolis and UN-Habitat on April 15. Since it's beginning, the series has brought together over 1,000 participants from local and regional governments, the UN system, partners from the civil society and the private sector to share their experiences and initiatives on how cities handle the COVID-19 pandemic. This learning session on Digital Technologies highlighted the role of new technologies during the pandemic and beyond. G3ict emphasized that an important aspect when addressing the digital divide is how it affects persons with disabilities. The recovery phase after the outbreak must ensure more accessibility as we move towards the digital era. Read the complete News Release.

G3ict Announces New Country Representatives Under the Smart Cities for All Global Initiative
On April 27, G3ict appointed two new Country Representatives, Aya Jibreal from Saudi Arabia and Anatoliy Popko from Russia, under the aegis of its Smart Cities for All global initiative. Country Representatives collaborate with local and national governments, civil society, and private sector stakeholders in making global cities more inclusive in the context of the UN SDGs (#11), the UN Habitat III New Urban Agenda, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Country Representatives.
Katherine Chacón, Ecuador
Katherine Chacón is a PhD candidate on Urban Regeneration. Recently, she has worked as a Research Consultant for the Institute for Transport and Development Policies (ITDP) Access for All Series Transport Paper to document case studies and good practices in Quito. It aimed to highlight that transportation is the key to access employment, education, healthcare and particularly provides greater independence for persons with disabilities. In 2019, she also worked on a policy brief for World Enabled and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in that utilizes census and household survey data from countries across Latin America to help determine the extent of gaps and barriers faced by persons with disabilities.
Ahmed El-Rida, Libya
Ahmed El-Rida is an architect and urban planner with a keen interest in accessibility. His firm, ATTAYSEER specializes in accessibility consulting and was the first to promote accessibility and Design for All in Libya. In October 2019, he participated in a radio program in Libya to mark the International Day of the White Cane and talk about White Cane and its relationship to the built environment. He also participated in a training in December 2019, held in cooperation with International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) that included representatives of the High National Election Commission (HNEC) who work to implement accessibility in polling stations in Libya.
