Feeling the Heat

Spring has arrived, and summer heatwaves are soon to follow. This year will be different than others for so many reasons. Amid the pandemic, climate change impacts continue to be felt around the world and close to home.

Locally, we’re feeling the heat. In the last decade, we’ve experienced more extreme heat days (with temperatures over 30°C) than normal. By 2050, scientists predict extreme heat days will more than double in our watershed. What will this mean for the plants, animals and people who live here?

Heat-related emergency visits are expected to increase. Plants and wildlife will experience more drought and heat stress, with water and food sources becoming scarce. For example, worms and small grubs will burrow deeper into the soil to stay cool during heat waves, making it difficult for the animals that eat them to find them. Even pets are affected by extremely hot summer days. Something as simple as walking your dog can result in injury if pavement becomes too hot.

Join us this spring for our Climate Change and Your Health webinar series. We’ll engage a panel of experts to discuss the effects of climate change in the rural watershed and ways to help keep you, your property and our communities healthy.
