Dear CARTA family,

I, along with CARTA faculty, staff and board members, am looking forward to celebrating our students’ achievements with their family and friends on May 8th at 10 a.m. in our CARTA Virtual Commencement Ceremony.

Congratulations Spring Class of 2020!

In the Spirit of the Blue + Gold,

CARTA CLOSEUP

Below are images of Mayor Carlos Gimenez (left) congratulating the hard work Panthers have put into helping our local healthcare workers and of Chief Williams (right) of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue holding one of 1,000 3D-printed face shields.

They were printed in collaboration with CARTA's Miami Beach Urban Studios and FIU College of Engineering and Computing by a gift from FIU President’s Council member, Angela Martinez, and FIU alumnus and now-retired member of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Raul Chavez.

FIU EXPANDS 3D-PRINTED PPE INITIATIVE TO LOCAL FIRE-RESCUE DEPARTMENTS WITH GIFT FROM ALUMNUS, PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL MEMBER

Supported by a gift from FIU President’s Council member Angela Martinez and FIU alumnus Raul Chavez ’80, the college 3D-printed 1,000 protective face shields for local fire-rescue departments. The shields—made utilizing more than 30 of the university’s 3D printers and assembled at the Miami Beach Urban Studios—were transferred to the City of Miami and Miami-Dade fire and rescue departments on April 17.

“We were very concerned about the shortage of supplies. When we saw that FIU was working on this project, it occurred to us that we could do something to benefit the firefighters and first responders here in our community who are on the front lines, as well,” Martinez said. CDC TIPS FOR HEALTH & SAFETY

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
  • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
    • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
    • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
    • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
    • Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

Stay up-to-date with messages from the CDC regarding coronavirus protection.

FIU BROADCAST MEDIA MAJOR, RAQUEL QUIROZ, TALKS ABOUT HER NBCUNIVERSAL INTERNSHIP DURING THE PANDEMIC

While working in the NBC building was a “surreal” experience for Quiroz, she says that she’s definitely become more confident and comfortable with the new workflow. Even working remotely, Quiroz still has constant guidance and is able to connect and learn from her teammates. Read the full interview of her experience interning remotely with NBCUniversal.

CORONAVIRUS IS CROWDING LIMITED OUTDOOR SPACES SAYS FIU ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR RIFKIND

“What used to be open space that would allow people to go for a walk, to stretch their legs, to breathe and just clear their heads – a lot of that space isn't available to us anymore. So it is forcing more people to use the relatively limited network of safe pedestrian and cycling paths in South Florida. And as a result, some of these pathways have gotten even more crowded than they would be normally,” said FIU Architecture's David Rifkind. Take a look into how Miami's public spaces have evolved during the pandemic.

FIFTH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CRUNCH WORKSHOP HOSTED ON ZOOM

The two-day conference was originally planned to be held at FIU’s Miami Beach Urban Studios along with a public exhibition of research work with carbon-neutral design projects, movies, animations and 3D-printed models all focused on a timeline from 2019-2100 in the Washington Gallery for one month. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition has been postponed to late fall and the workshop conference was converted into a cloud-based Zoom video session. Dive into highlights from the CRUNCH conference.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON: FIU MUSIC STUDENT RECITALS GO VIRTUAL

For some, it is the completion of a capstone project and internship involving library, analytical or experiential work but for most students, it is their final public performance showcasing a compilation of pieces that they work on throughout the year before they go on to earn their degree.

So when instruction moved online, FIU School of Music administrators, faculty and staff looked for solutions to ensure that graduating students would not miss out on this important milestone. Take a peek into how FIU Music Students are working from home.

FIU THEATRE PROFESSOR MICHAEL YAWNEY BELIEVES IN THE POWER OF THEATRE AS A FORCE FOR CHANGE

Professor Yawney not only teaches classes in the Department of Theatre such as directing, playwriting and theatre history, but is also associated with the Honors College. He teaches a freshman seminar with physics professor and fellow FIU ADVANCE team member Pete Markowitz, which he has done for six years now. "Teaching the interdisciplinary class is different from teaching subject matter," he says. “A lot of times, students have been rewarded for taking tests/retaining information. In this seminar, we teach them how to think and how to be responsible people in the world.” Learn out about Yawney's belief in the power of theatre.
