So here’s my big admission. For the last 5 weeks, I’ve had very little interest in having someone yapping in my ear. There’s only one thing that’s important (and stressful) and that’s that people are safe and well. So I’ve listened to a lot of music over that period (and playing way too much Hearts on my iPad).

Music has always been a great pleasure for me so I’m dedicating this edition to podcast episodes about pets. Wait, no. Music!

Rock on! (Wow, that seems pretty dated.)

The Skimmer’s Hook: Who doesn’t love a good cover song? How about tons from your favorite band?

Listen if you like: Music, Cover Songs, Rockville

I can’t believe I just learned about this show. In truth, I want to alert you to the show more than a specific episode. Music podcasts can be finicky. Some don’t play any music and that drives me insane. Yes, I know there is this thing called music rights which makes things tough for some shows but it’s hard for me to listen to talk about music without hearing at least snippets of songs.

This show typically focuses on cover songs of a particular band. For fans of a certain Athens-based band that was absolutely huge in the Nineties and Aughties, this is a fun listen.

What surprised me the most was that the host stays out the way as he plays various cover songs from R.E.M. - most of which I had never heard. And unlike a lot of cover versions, they were almost all solid in their own right.

Five Is The Magic Number

The Skimmer’s Hook: What does it sound like when a song doesn’t have the usual set of beats?

Listen if you like: Music, Math, Charlotte

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard the term, ‘math rock.’ Anyone? Bueller?

Honestly, when I heard that term, the first and only thing that came to mind was Schoolhouse Rock.

The host, Joni Deutsch, interviews Cuzco, a Charlotte-based rock band and we get to learn what the heck math rock is. Here’s a teaser that I’m taking straight from the interview that will make you curious:

“Most regular bands count to four. We count to five. So we add an extra beat in there. In every typical song, you’re counting to four (like “one … two … three … four …”). When you add an extra beat, it makes it sound a little off, and that’s the allure of math rock. So long as it’s something odd and something off, you’re able to play around with your music and try to change it up from the conventional standard rhythm.”

The question I ask you after you listen - does it feel off or just good?

The Skimmer’s Hook: Who is the weirdest rock star?

Listen if you like: Music, Parodies, Not Covers

The other day, two hours after listening to this episode, I had one of those why-is-someone-reading-my-mind moments. The music was playing in the background and I hear a song that sounds like Don McLean’s American Pie. But something’s off. And not in a 5 instead of 4 beats per minute way.

As it turns out, it’s Weird Al Yankovic’s parody, The Saga Begins. Watch that video to be fully amused and of course, good luck getting the worm out of your ear.

This episode is the setup and then the reading of a recent New York Times piece about the appeal of Weird Al Yankovic. It’s a fun stroll down memory lane for those of us who lived through all of it but it’s also an enlightening look into an artist named Alfred.

And in something utterly surprising, we find out that one of the biggest Broadway musicals in the last 5 years was influenced by a guy that sang about SPAM, which is coincidentally, a parody of an R.E.M. song.
