FRIDAY 1 MAY 2020

Thank you for signing up to our recent webinars. We hope you enjoyed Prashant Rao's seminar on The Atlantic and Nic Newman's webinar about the opportunities of podcasting and the impact of COVID-19. If you weren't able to join us (or if you want a quick recap), here's a summary of our conversations and a few resources you may find helpful in the months ahead.

🏡 We are planning webinars for next week on Wednesday and Thursday. We'll announce the details soon.

OUR RESEARCH WEBINAR

News podcasting and the impact of COVID-19

Our report. The number of news podcasts globally rose by almost 12,000 between January and October 2019, according to News Podcasts and the Opportunities for Publishers, a report the Reuters Institute published in December last year. The report finds that publishers are making significant investments in news podcasting hoping to attract younger audiences, build habit, and bring in additional revenue.

Our webinar. Lead author Nic Newman explained the main findings of the report an explored how the pandemic is changing the space, in terms of supply and demand.

OUR WEDNESDAY SEMINAR

Building a global media brand

The seminar. This week we also kicked off our weekly Business and Practice of Journalism Seminar Series with Prashant Rao, Global Editor at The Atlantic. He talked about the history and the mission of the US-based news magazine.

The takeaway. Prashant outlined how The Atlantic’s mission is not to compete with the outlets such as The New York Times orThe Financial Times in covering anything and everything. Instead, he says, the magazine maintains a focus on covering issues that are consistent with its founding values, particularly stories on the future of global democracy, authoritarianism and populism.

The series. This seminar was the first of this term's seminar series on the business and practice of journalism, chaired by Meera Selva. You can sign up for the next events in this link
