Registration is now open for our virtual Excellence in Teaching Day Keynote on
Friday, May 15th from 2:00 - 3:30.

ETD 2020 Registration Open

Registration is now open for this year’s Excellence in Teaching Day! Given current restrictions on campus gatherings, we’ve reimagined ETD as a virtual event focused on our keynote speaker, University of San Francisco’s Professor Rhonda Magee, a nationally-recognized authority on mindfulness and racial justice in the field of law and beyond. Magee’s talk on “The Inner Work of Teaching and Learning for All” will be delivered as a webinar on Friday, May 15, 2020 from 2:00 - 3:30 (please note the new date and time). A recording of her presentation will also be made available on the CTE’s website.

The reflection that Professor Magee invites -- about resilience, justice, and mindfulness in the classroom -- feels even more timely in our present moment. Aware of the big and small ways our communities are currently suffering, and the significant disruptions we have all experienced to our teaching and learning environments, we hope that this event will offer some sustenance and connection.

We look forward to joining with you on May 15th for this opportunity to re-envision resilience in our work. If you have any questions, please feel free to email centerforteaching@bc.edu.

Congrats Graduate Student Instructors!

While the Graduate Student Teaching Recognition Ceremony needed to be canceled, we would like to recognize this year's 22 ACT Program graduates and 55 Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award winners. Graduate students, thank you for your dedication to teaching, and thank you to everyone who supports graduate students and graduate student teaching at Boston College.

Final Push: Proctorio Troubleshooting

With final exams upon us, we’re in the home stretch of this spring’s remote teaching experiment. For those of you using online proctoring software, please note that if you or your students run into technical problems during an exam, the best way to get help is to visit https://proctorio.com/support and scroll down to Start Live Chat, available 24/7. Please keep in mind that issues with student computers might be difficult to resolve in a tight timeframe, especially for students relying on VPN to access Canvas, so consider options for back-up plans and accommodations.

Summer ACT Workshop Schedule

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Apprenticeship in College Teaching program’s summer seminars, which will all be held in remote formats. ACT is a free, non-credit-bearing program that prepares graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for teaching careers in higher education. For more information, please contact the ACT Program Coordinator.

Summer Remote Course Preparation

Given the announcement that Summer Session I will be held off-campus, CTE and CDIL are already working to help faculty prepare to launch their summer courses in either remote or online formats. For those teaching undergraduate courses this summer, those will be offered primarily as fully online courses (fully designed, mostly asynchronous courses with small class sizes) and are being supported mainly by CDIL staff. For those teaching graduate courses, those are continuing in the current “remote” style (with a balance of synchronous and asynchronous components) and are being supported mainly through the CTE.

We are already working with the various schools to arrange workshops and other needed support, so if you haven’t already, you can expect to hear soon about the resources that will be available to you as you prepare your Summer term courses. In the meantime, please reach out to centerforteaching@bc.edu with any questions.

“Internationalizing the Curriculum” Seminar

The Center for International Higher Education is hosting an online professional development seminar on “Internationalizing the Curriculum” the week of June 8th. Led by Professor Emerita Betty Leask, a leading international scholar in the field of internationalization of the curriculum, the seminar will include opportunities to learn from and with international scholars and practitioners in the field. Participation is free for BC faculty and staff (email CIHE to request a promotional code to register).
