Worship Online
The 8:00am Sunday morning services will continue to be live-streamed on our Facebook page (Zion Lutheran Church and School) as long as the shelter-in-place advisory is in effect. The services are also available as an archive at any time on our Facebook page.  Bulletins are available digitally through a link on our website (www.zionseymour.org) and through our church-wide email distribution list. To be placed on that list, please call the church office. You may also make the request on the “Contact Us” page of our website.

Share the Peace of the Lord – Please join the livestream of the service during the ten minutes leading up to the start time. During that time, please feel free to post a comment or greeting to your fellow worshipers, perhaps by sharing the peace or with a simple “hello.”

Offerings may be mailed to or dropped off at Zion. If you would like to set up automatic withdrawal of your offerings, please call the church office, or download this form and return it to the office. Thank you to everyone whose offerings help us to give witness to the unchanging Christ and His promises in these times.

Prayer List – If you would like the names of those included in the Prayer of the Church in the upcoming service, please contact the church office so that your email might be added to the weekly prayer chain list. Out of respect for the privacy of our members, we will not be publishing the names of those on the prayer list in any communications that are available on the internet.

In-Person Worship – While in-person worship has been suspended for the time being, please check the website, Facebook page, and your email for updates. Your board of lay ministry remains committed to resuming in-person worship as soon as possible.

Lord's Supper Celebrations Resume - Beginning on Sunday, May 3rd, Zion will resume celebrations of the Sacrament for the Lord’s people, albeit in a slightly different setting. The decision was made after consulting with lay ministers and health care officials in our congregation. We believe that this will bring the blessings of Christ’s Body and Blood, namely forgiveness, life, and salvation to Christ’s people, while also upholding the Fifth Commandment concerns of protecting our neighbor.  Please see the email you received for information on the new process and safety standards put into place, the times available and to sign up.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Pastor Akey or Pastor Stuckwisch. To schedule, please call the church office at 812-522-1089 between 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. When you schedule, please take note of which door you should wait at to enter as it may vary.

Altar Flowers –To place flowers on the altar please sign up on the flower chart in the hallway across from the sacristy.

Sunday Morning Zoom Bible Class, "To Walk and Not Grow Weary: Renewing Your Strength in Difficult Times" meets at 9:30am. Please contact Pastor Stuckwisch for information on how to join the meeting from a computer, tablet, or phone.

Divine Service - Setting Four
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Good Shepherd Sunday

Theme
Believers saturate themselves in fervent prayer and the breaking of bread.  Believers empty themselves of possessions, giving belongings to the underprivileged.  Suffering is endured, and this is the very nature of Christ.  By His wounds, we are healed.  He is the one true Shepherd without blemish, fault, or sin.  Yet He was unjustly threatened, despised, and condemned.  But He is also the One who opens the door, unbars the gates, and welcomes His sheep eternally.

Hymn of Invocation - LSB 711 Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us
Savior, like a shepherd lead us;
    Much we need Your tender care.
In Your pleasant pastures feed us,
    For our use Your fold prepare.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    You have bought us; we are Yours.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    You have bought us; we are Yours.

We are Yours; in love befriend us,
    Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Your flock, from sin defend us,
    Seek us when we go astray.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    Hear us children when we pray.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    Hear us children when we pray.

You have promised to receive us,
    Poor and sinful though we be;
You have mercy to relieve us,
    Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    Early let us turn to You.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    Early let us turn to You.

Early let us seek Your favor,
    Early let us do Your will;
Blessèd Lord and only Savior,
    With Your love our spirits fill.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    You have loved us, love us still.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
    You have loved us, love us still.

Invocation
P   In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

Exhortation - Psalm 124:8; Psalm 130:3–4; Luke 18:13
P   Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C   who made heaven and earth.
P   If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C   But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P   Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, and call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

Confession of Sins
C   Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

Absolution - [John 20:19–23]
P   Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

Introit - Psalm 95:1–3, 6–7a; antiphon: John 10:14, 15b
I am the good shepherd.
   I know my own and my own know me, and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
   let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
   let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
   and a great King above all gods.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
   let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
   and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son

   and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,

   is now, and will be forever. Amen.
I am the good shepherd.
   I know my own and my own know me, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Kyrie - Mark 10:47
C   Lord, have mercy;
Christ, have mercy;
Lord, have mercy.

Hymn of Praise - LSB 950 Splendor and Honor
Splendor and honor, majesty and power
Are Yours, O Lord God, fount of ev’ry blessing,
For by Your bidding was the whole creation
    Called into being.

Praised be the true Lamb, slain for our redemption,
By whose self-off’ring we are made God’s people:
A priestly kingdom, from all tongues and nations,
    Called to God’s service.

To the Almighty, throned in heav’nly splendor,
And to the Savior, Christ our Lamb and Shepherd,
Be adoration, praise, and glory given,
    Now and forever.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P   The Lord be with you.
C   And also with you.

P   Let us pray.
Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C   Amen.

First Reading - Acts 2:42–47
   They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

A   This is the Word of the Lord.
C   Thanks be to God.

Epistle - 1 Peter 2:19–25
   This is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

A   This is the Word of the Lord.
C   Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse Steve Grelle
Cantor:   Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.  Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! I am the Good Shepherd.  I know My own and My own know Me.
All:        Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Holy Gospel - John 10:1–10
P   The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the tenth chapter.
C   Glory to You, O Lord.

   [Jesus said:] “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
   So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

P   This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed
C   I believe in one God,
     the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth
          and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
     the only-begotten Son of God,
     begotten of His Father before all worlds,
     God of God, Light of Light,
     very God of very God,
     begotten, not made,
     being of one substance with the Father,
     by whom all things were made;
     who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
     and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
     and was made man;
     and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
     He suffered and was buried.
     And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
          and ascended into heaven
     and sits at the right hand of the Father.
     And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
     whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the Lord and giver of life,
     who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
     who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
     who spoke by the prophets.
     And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
     I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
     and I look for the resurrection of the dead
     and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Hymn of the Day - LSB 709 The King of Love My Shepherd Is
The King of love my shepherd is,
    Whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am His
    And He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow,
    My ransomed soul He leadeth
And, where the verdant pastures grow,
    With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
    But yet in love He sought me
And on His shoulder gently laid
    And home rejoicing brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
    With Thee, dear Lord, beside me,
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
    Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
    Thine unction grace bestoweth;
And, oh, what transport of delight
    From Thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days
    Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
    Within Thy house forever!

Weekly Announcements

Zion Boards/Organizations

On March 8th it was announced that the call for a new Principal of Zion Lutheran School had been declined.  At that time, the Call Committee requested that the Board of Zion Lutheran School re-evaluate the best approach for this position.  Based on several factors including the uncertainty we all now live in with COVID-19, the board decided to fill the position as a temporary part-time principal for the next one to two school years.  The board is happy to announce that Mrs. Stacy Wright has graciously accepted this position.  She will officially begin this role on June 1, 2020.  During the school year she will spend half of her time as principal and will fill the remainder of her time as a part-time kindergarten teacher. Please join the board in expressing gratitude toward Mrs. Wright as she begins this new role and keep Mrs. Wright and the school in your prayers as we maneuver through these interesting times.

An Ascension Eve worship service is scheduled to be livestreamed at 6:00 p.m. May 20th.

The Parish Planning Council is meeting weekly to coordinate the overall ministry of Zion during COVID-19. Please give your pastors or leaders a call if you have suggestions that might be helpful in serving others in the uncharted waters of our time.

Schneck Coronavirus Hotline - If you believe you have been exposed to the virus or have concerning symptoms, call Schneck's dedicated 24/7 hotline at 812-524-4266 for free coronavirus phone screenings.  Healthcare professionals staffing the hotline will recommend the most appropriate next steps for your care.  Individuals may also reach out to their provider's office if they have questions or concerns.

Office Hours - The church office is open as normal to accomplish essential tasks.

Cornerstone -  The May newsletter is available by clicking here .  It is also "in the mail".

Zion Women's Fellowship meetings have been cancelled until June.

The Zion Foundation Board is accepting grant requests again this year.  Requests may come from any board, committee, or member of Zion Lutheran Church; however, grants must be approved by the appropriate board. In an effort to help people better understand and to guide them through the process for grant requests, the Zion Foundation Board has developed a grant application form.  This form has all the key information needed for the review, plus it also has a narrative of helpful hints of items.  Please be very specific about the amount requested (have a quote sheet if possible) and the way the requested money will be used.  Also work with the board that will be responsible for the grant. The Zion Foundation Board is currently accepting grant requests for the 2020 year. The request should be submitted no later than May 3, 2020.  All requests must be made in writing on the grant application form and delivered to the church office or the foundation president, Matt Meyer.  Grant application forms are available in the church office.

Extend Care Potential Re-Opening

Teacher Resignation -- While we hate to see her leave our school faculty, Mrs. Ruth Southerland has submitted her resignation to be effective at the end of this current school year.  She has been in the teaching ministry for 25 years, with all but one of them being here at Zion Lutheran School.  She has taught all age levels that we offer here at ZLS over the years and we appreciate her dedication, enthusiasm & energy toward helping us serve those many children & families that have entered her classroom door.  Please join our school & church staffs in wishing God’s blessings to Ruth as she steps into the next phase of her life. Thank you, Ruth, for your many years of service here at ZLS!

Registration Open -- Zion Lutheran School 2020-2021 school year registration is open.  Our programs consist of classes ranging from 2-year old children through kindergarten and extend care offerings in both the 2020 summer & 2020-2021 school year.  Please get enrollments into the school office right away!

ZLS Mission Effort – The new reading curriculums for ZLS for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year has been ordered.  As you have seen in past weeks, we are promoting a “Reading Curriculum Sponsorship” fund drive.  The purchase cost of these materials is $14,817.62 for all student/teacher materials (consumable & non-consumable).  Currently we have raised $4,797 toward our fund drive goal—still needing $10,020.62 to fulfill the cost.  Join us in this effort by donating to this most worthy cause, to help our ZLS children to become proficient readers!    We need your financial assistance desperately!  Sponsorship levels are:

  • Platinum Level: $2,500+
  • Gold Level: $1,500 - 2,499
  • Silver Level: $500 - 1,499
  • Bronze Level: any amount up to $499
Make your check payable to "Zion Lutheran School Reading Curriculum".
