A Message from our NAASC President

Spelman Sisters:

If you had told me on January 1st that 2020 would be a year that offered the life changes that have unfolded in these past few months, I would not have believed you!  COVID-19 has the world as we know it in a different place!

Like other college students, Spelman students are doing their best to adjust to the totally-virtual classrooms and all that is required.  Graduating seniors are doing their best to “pull through.”  Parents are making final payments, sometimes after being laid off by their employers.  Alumnae are supporting Spelman in any and every way!

The pandemic has taken a toll on the Spelman community.  We have lost mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers.  In all this turmoil, I believe my faith has grown stronger, and I have a greater appreciation for those that continue to ensure that Spelman will outlast this pandemic and whatever comes next.  Let us remember to thank Spelman staff for working days AND nights to make choices that continue to sustain Spelman and care for her students.  Let us give thanks to the on-campus alumnae who, led by Linda Hart Patton, C’88, will ensure our history and traditions do not get lost in the discussion and preparation.  Let us also pray for and encourage our students whose Spelman experience is forever changed.

Yes, this pandemic has taken us on a ride that none of us wanted, but Spelman, aided by its staff, students, parents, and alumnae will remain…”Undaunted by the Fight.”

Sisterly,

Tara L. Buckner, C’87, President
National Alumnae Association of Spelman College

Thanks to Founders Day Sisterhood Tea Attendees!

Spelman College Virtual Founders Day 2020 Sisterhood Tea - YouTubeThanks to all who joined our April 11th Virtual Sisterhood Tea in honor of Founders Day! The Virtual Tea followed a broadcast of excerpts from Founders Days programs gone by.  Alumnae from all NAASC regions spoke of their favorite experiences at Spelman College.  I celebrated with two members of the Class of 2020 – my daughter Meridian Buckner-Swain and my niece Madeleine Buckner-McCurdy.  During our chat, we shared a few tears of sadness but turned them into tears of joy as we discussed joining NAASC upon receiving their degrees.  Following the Virtual Tea, both said they sincerely enjoyed participating, because it made them feel that they have so much to look forward to as alumnae.

CHAPTER EVENTS & UPDATES

San Diego - Inland Empire, CA Chapter

During the months of March 2020 and April 2020, members and friends of the San Diego ~ Inland Empire chapter gathered in very different ways, but each gather was meaningful.  In March, we gathered with our Morehouse brothers, friends and family to fellowship and spend time together.  Little did we know that this would be our last opportunity to see each other in person.  The laughter, networking and love shared mean even more now.  In observance of Founders Day 2020, chapter members participated in virtual events sponsored by our beloved alma mater and also gathered in a virtual sister circle of love.  We were blessed to have two current students join us.  We sang and danced to “We are Family” by Sister Sledge, had a sisterly conversation between alumnae and current students, and tried to use one word to share with the Spelman sisterhood means to all … we all failed, beautifully.  The chapter also hosted a video conversation with current students to make sure that all is well now that they are home.  At the request of current students, we plan to meet with them every two weeks.  The next chapter meeting will be held in June 2020 via Zoom.  This new normal will not stop our sisterhood – Spelman is the gift that keeps giving.  For more information about the chapter, please email sandiego@naasc.org or visit www.naascsdie.org

Atlanta, GA Chapter

Standing in solidarity with the College and NAASC chapters nationwide, the Atlanta Chapter continues to be undaunted as we face the current crisis by finding unique ways to meet the needs of members and the Spelman community.

While many of our planned activities were canceled or postponed, on March 14th, the Chapter hosted a virtual State of the College Address” with President, Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell. Attendees listened as Dr. Campbell shared how the College was navigating the changing landscape brought by COVID-19. In addition, she updated participants broadly on the accomplishments and the challenges of the College, and how alumnae can stay engaged.

The Chapter celebrated the College’s 139th Founders’ Day in grand fashion. We invited sisters near and far to wear white and join us to sing the Spelman Hymn via Zoom at Noon on Thursday, April 9th. Then on Friday, April 10th, we hosted a Virtual Decades Jam Session on social media. Each decade had an hour dedicated to dance to its greatest hits.

We are regularly exhibiting the Chapter’s theme, Powered by Sisterhood! Remain informed and encouraged. Join us for the next general body meeting on May 2nd at 2:00 pm, visit www.atlantanaasc.org  for details.
