Maryville College

MEMORANDUM

TO: Maryville College Students
CC: Maryville College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Dr. Tom Bogart, President
RE: Emergency Grants for Students through the CARES Act
DATE: April 28, 2020

We at Maryville College continue to look for ways to help students who are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and to partner with other entities that can offer relief.

I am pleased to announce that money received from the U.S. Department of Education’s CARES Act/Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund—combined with contributions from generous donors—have allowed us to create a COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. We are hopeful that this institutional fund will allow us to assist hundreds of Maryville College students who have been financially impacted by this pandemic, regardless of their federal financial aid status or citizenship.

Grants can be requested to cover expenses related to disruptions caused by COVID-19. To receive grant funding, a simple online application must be completed, indicating the amount of funding requested and the types of expenses incurred by the student. Expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Housing
  • Utility bills, including internet access through provider or cellular providers
  • Transportation, including emergency travel home from campus
  • Unexpected medical or dental costs
  • Cost of books and/or supplies
  • Technology purchase
  • Childcare

All requests will be evaluated, and payment amounts will be determined based on available funding. Once a request is processed, funding is sent directly to the student by check. Students will need to confirm their mailing address in the application.

Questions regarding the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund are best answered by staff members in the College’s Financial Aid Office. Please contact them at financialaid@maryvillecollege.edu or 865-981-8100.

I would especially like to thank Director of Financial Aid Erin Johnson, who has spent days following the Department of Education’s changing guidelines and requirements for this fund and has developed a plan for distribution of grants that will benefit the majority of our students.
