THANK YOU to our staff and students for making a smooth transition to working remotely in March so we could wrap up the spring semester and prepare for our summer ELC Clinic session. This is how we do business these days!
SHOUT OUT TO THE ELC and thanks to Stephen Hume for writing this article in March’s edition of Focus Magazine. We spent a fun afternoon talking with Stephen, and he did rich justice to the community of lawyers (past students), clients and staff who make up the ELC.
CONGRATULATIONS to the Tŝilhqot’in Nation on the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that definitively stops the development of open pit gold and copper mine proposed that threatened a sacred area of cultural importance to the Tŝilhqot’in peoples. The mine proposal has been resurfacing in legal actions for years, despite rejections at the environmental assessment, governmental and federal court levels.
A number of ELC students had the opportunity to assist the with the case to save Teẑtan Biny (Fish Lake). In an email to ELC Legal Director Calvin Sandborn, JP Laplante of the Tŝilhqot'in National Government offered special thanks to the ELC for all the support over the years and said, "Sometimes the good guys win, and it's only with the help from many quarters." We are so grateful to have been of assistance and, we are all celebrating this win.
