From the President

Hello Steelheaders, these are very different times, hope everyone is doing well. I would first like to talk about the very tragic passing of David Shingledecker from COVID 19. David was a very kind and generous person and will be missed. He had a passion for fishing and was proud to be a Steelheader. The club will make a monetary donation at some point, his wife Juanita is in the Hospital still fighting this Virus. Let's all pray for Her.
Last Saturday, Brett Mauk became a hero when he saved two people whose Canoe had capsized in 43-degree water. Great Job, Brett! We certainly appreciate your alertness and willingness to help.
The Governor's executive order restricting the use of motorboats was not taken well by our members. Our State leaders of the MSSFA, Executive Director, and President put out a letter supporting the Governor's order. This letter came out on April 20th, which upset the majority of our members. None of our members or members from other chapters were allowed to express their views before the letter came out.
Our members were also upset that in the letter, they used David Shingledecker's name without permission. The President of MSSFA said I permitted him to use his name. I would never do that! Dave was a good friend of mine; if the MSSFA were going to use his name, they should have contacted the family for permission.
As most of you know, on April 24th, our Board of Directors drafted a letter to MSSFA Board. The letter outlined our disagreement with the MSSFA letter. On April 25th, we sent the message to our members and posted it on our Facebook group.
In response, the President of the MSSFA sent Mark Span the State Director, and myself a lengthy unprofessional, insulting e-mail detailing how they thought we are wrong. We felt that it was important to pass this update to our members.
As of now, we are going to have to cancel the May membership meeting as it looks like the restaurant will not be open. The May 23rd Lake Michigan Spring Tournament and the Connie McGowan Tournament are still on. Contact Greg Peck 269-998-9407, to sign up. If there are any changes, we will send out a notice. Check the website for updates.

I'm sure all would agree, It's been a tough two months, notwithstanding the coronavirus, but the loss of our dear friend Dave Shingledecker membership chairman to the virus. Our prayers go out to his family.
The Michigan governor has now allowed motorized boating with 6 ft. distancing and with only family members, state parks are limited openings, everyone will need to call the specific park they are going to, to see what services are going to be available, restrooms, boat launches, trails, camping, etc.
Ohio still hasn't opened up, selling out of state fishing licenses.
Salmon are starting to show up in South Haven, and St Joe, plenty of lakers also, mostly using spoons on riggers. Check the charter's web pages for techniques they are using for good early catches.
Perch are starting to show up in the Southern basin in Erie.
Pan fishing starting to heat up, most lakes are in pre-spawn, and beds are being fanned.
Tight lines and screaming drags.
