Tango in lockdown

Tango Mendoza musicians performing
Dear <<First Name>>

We skipped a month with our newsletter as we dealt with the closing down of classes, milongas - and a fractured wrist!

In March we wrote about cancellation of so many upcoming Festivals and workshops - little did we know that everything would have to close in order to deal with The Pandemic.

It could be a very long time before we are able to attend classes, workshops, milongas and festivals again, but in the meantime there are classes and mini milongas online - and it is a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in the music.

We have put together a selection of what is available online. A writer in the 'Guardian' in April suggested that all of Argentina's 44 million inhabitants were offering online tango classes! Hardly but as the month has gone by more people have had to turn to inventing and discovering new ways to keep their tango alive.

Best wishes,

Carol

Tango musicians and bands

These tango bands play for dancers as well as events. Check out the Facebook pages for these musicians - they may be doing an online event, or have music you can purchase.

Tango Music and the Tango DJ

If you simply stick to the music of the Golden Age of Tango - there is believed to be over 40,000 recordings from that period. Many are obscure and difficult, if not impossible to find, but many are available.
Discovering the music - listening and learning is a life-time's work, but while you are missing the social side you don't need to miss the music.
Here are some links that may help you find out more
Tango DJ - has a huge of list of resources, fact sheets and places you can buy tango music.
Tejas tango - playing music for milongas is no longer current - but there is a stack of information still online. The author is Stephen Brown whose knowledge of tango music is legendary.
Totango - is a resource compiled by Keith Elshaw of Canada whose technical skills have resulted in the remastering of much of tango's great music.
Tango Via was set up in Buenos Aires in order to preserve tango music as it was written and recorded. It appears to have gone offline but it is very worth listening to some of the recordings on the Wikipedia link and of Ignacio Varchausky, founder of Orquesta El Arranque
