~~~ Issue 15, June 2020 ~~~
Welcome to the latest eNews letter. We hope everyone is safe and well during these strange times. And a warm welcome to all of our new subscribers. It’s been over a month since our last Gazette and a lot has happened
The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to spread around the world and tragically here in Scotland over 4000 people have lost their lives due to the virus.
However significant progress has been made in controlling the spread of the virus and we have moved from lockdown through Phase 1 and now into Phase 2 of the route out of lockdown. And we have seen other countries make huge progress including New Zealand declaring itself virus free for 24 days.
We have also witnessed the horrific murder of George Floyd by a policeman in the USA which led to wide spread protests across the US and around the world, including here in Scotland, in support of #BlackLivesMatter
Here in Glasgow we have also witnessed unacceptable and deplorable scenes in and around George Square where peaceful protestors and the public have been subject to violence and intimidation by a gang of racist thugs.
But we also continue to see the strength and resilience of local people and communities across the city as we come together to support those in need during these difficult times - many of the inequalities that our poorest communities face have been made much worse due to the pandemic and lockdown.
What much of this highlights is that the pre-COVID normality did not work for many local people in our communities and neighbourhoods as well as not working for the planet. But we have shown that local people and communities have the passion, energy, skills, innovation, resources, connections and more to be able to meet the needs of their communities. We are stronger when we work collectively for the common good. However there also needs to be big system changes to allow communities to thrive and flourish.
We have a real opportunity for a radical response to address the pandemic and the climate crisis – to enable us in “building a fairer, greener and more equal society” - that puts people and the planet before profit.
So what’s your vision of a more equal society?
Are you ready to help build a better Glasgow and a better Scotland?
Information about COVID-19 Coronavirus
We have moved all information about COVID-19 coronavirus onto our website - www.glasgowecotrust.org.uk/covid19 - including:
Glasgow Eco Trust update
De'ils on Wheels bike repairs - we are offering bike repairs to key workers and the general public and we have been fully booked for 7 weeks! You can book via our website with slots for the following week being released at the end of each week. We are not selling any bikes at this stage. If anyone has any unwanted adult bikes please contact us as we are in desperate need of donations for when we fully re-open.
DRC Local network online calls - we have taken the local network online. Any voluntary organisations that are based in or deliver services in G13/G14 are welcome to join. The calls take place at 10am every Monday morning. Please email neil@glasgowecotrust.org.uk if you wish to join these weekly online calls.
Active Travel - cycling activities - we are looking at how we can re-start some services such as learn to ride, cycle skills and led rides. Initially this will likely be with individuals or individual households to ensure everything is safe. We've set up a short survey to gather your views.
Active Travel - essential cycle skills - there has been a huge increase in the number of people cycling and for many they are either beginners or returning to the saddle for the first time in a long time. Check out these essential tips for beginners and essential cycling skills videos.
Volunteers' Week - our volunteers may have missed out on Marie's Victoria sponge cake which has become a regular feature at our celebrations but our volunteer coordinator Cindy made sure no one went without. A family project sprang into life with her daughter baking gluten free Anzac biscuits, Cindy on the packing line and her husband and son delivering by scooter where possible. Quite a few of our volunteers got in touch to say how much they appreciated the gesture of a teabag and biscuit plopping onto their doormat. We are also having regular video call catch ups with our volunteers too!
A just and sustainable renewal for Glasgow - we recently co-signed an Open Letter to Glasgow City Council requesting the people of Glasgow lead the way on a city recovery plan focused on well-being, justice and sustainability. People need to be at the forefront as we #BuildBackBetter. In addition over 80 civic society organisations from across different sectors of Scottish life have also written to the First Minister calling for a radical response to the coronavirus recovery that puts people before profit
#StreetsForAll Glasgow and #SpaceForDistancing campaign - Streets for All Glasgow is our joint project with Go Bike and On Bikes to crowd source ideas to improve walking and cycling across the city. This project complements the Council's #SpaceForDistancing initiative, which has been awarded £3.5 million from Sustrans Scotland, to support physical distancing measures across the city including the closure of Kelvin Way, a new cycle lane along the Clydeside and more to come.
#GivingTuesdayNow - many thanks to everyone that donated to us as part of Giving Tuesday Now in response to COVID-19 - we received almost £450 which is very much appreciated during these difficult times.
Staff update - we have weekly catch ups with all the staff. Neil, Liz and Cindy are all based from home, Paul is back doing bike repairs and Frank is furloughed. Also Cindy has just celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary and Paul turned 44! Best wishes to both staff members.
What has Frank been up to?
Not one for sitting still whilst furloughed from Glasgow Eco Trust, Frank has been helping LINKES deliver food parcels from Knightswood Community Centre Cafe to the elderly and more vulnerable members of our community.
He's been popping into the G13/G14 Community Aid Hub based in Yoker Resource Centre with delicious Scottish strawberries, and can often be found tending his allotment plot at the Kingsway Community Garden and his neeps, tatties, onions and carrots which are coming along nicely
And we look forward to having an unforloughed Frank back with the team!
