UM Helping High Schools Stay Connected

The University of Montevallo’s GEAR UP Jefferson County program is helping about 350 high school students stay connected with their education during social distancing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this academic year, GEAR UP partnered with eighth-grade classrooms at Fultondale High School, Tarrant High School and Fairfield High Preparatory School through its 1:1 initiative.

GEAR UP is designed to improve access, opportunities and outcomes for students from historically marginalized populations and underserved communities, particularly students of color, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and students with disabilities.

Through the 1:1 initiative, GEAR UP purchased laptops for the schools to loan to students. Learn more.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

COVID-19 Student Financial Assistance

The online application process for COVID-19 student financial assistance is now active.

The University has set aside $150,000 in federal emergency funding to be distributed to students who can demonstrate financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To apply for financial assistance, visit montevallo.edu/emergency-assist and choose the “COVID-19 Food and Financial Assistance Application” option.

The University will be distributing the remainder of the $1.2 million in federal emergency funds directly to students. UM is awaiting guidance from the United States Department of Education on how to properly distribute those funds to students in compliance with the Federal CARES Act.

Falcon Foods Closing for June

As the University will not be selling summer meal plans, Falcon Foods will be closing at the end of the semester and will not reopen during the month of June. Falcon Foods will decide about reopening for the remainder of the summer in late June.

Falcon Foods will still offer catering service with a 48-hour advance notice to secure staffing and product, and will still be open for orientation lunches this summer. To place a catering order, contact UM Director of Dining Services Jason Quarles at 205-688-0329 or Jason.Quarles@compass-usa.com.

Montevallo Alum Wins GSC Virtual Competition

University of Montevallo alum Jonathan Maloney has been voted as the Gulf South Conference Virtual Competition Champion in a competition celebrating the league’s most impressive records.

Maloney, who scored a record 24 game-winning goals in the sport of men’s soccer during his career, continuously advanced through the bracket thanks to fan and alumni support and received 51.2 percent of 1,436 votes in the Championship to edge out Valdosta State University alum Courtney Albritton’s 200 total bases in a single season in the sport of softball.

Maloney was one of two Montevallo alumni featured in the competition. Darbi Duke, who set a record with six stolen bases in a single game in the sport of softball, advanced to the Elite Eight round in the bracket.

Thank you to all students, faculty, staff and alumni who supported Maloney during the competition.

We are All Counting on You: Census 2020

Make your voice heard in the 2020 Census. It’s a safe and secure way to obtain federal funding for our state’s future. This money means better healthcare, schools, roads, job opportunities and more.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census is sent to every household in the country. The Census is a count of everyone residing in the U.S. The Census counts every person living in Alabama once, only once, and in the right place. It contains 10 simple questions and only takes six minutes to complete.

Students are counted where they spend most of their time, which means that the majority of University of Montevallo students will be counted in our community. Per the Census Bureau’s residence criteria, Montevallo students temporarily living away from campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic should still be counted for the state of Alabama.

Learn more at montevallo.edu/2020-census.
