Lark in the Park 2020

Fall has really turned the leaves now and that means it's time for the Lark in the Park.  It's going to be different this year since we have decided not to offer in-person events.  We have worked hard to create an outstanding list of self-guided tours and virtual experiences that will give you a great Catskills experience.  Read on.

Whether you prefer hiking, paddling, cycling, visiting fire towers or even driving the Scenic Byways and visiting great views, we have suggestions for you that will help you find the makings of a perfect day.

For instance, we list eight cycling routes that will let you push your limits or have a nice family ride.  Create your own tour by deciding how long to ride.  These rides are in locations that offer amazing scenery, quiet roads, country charm and easy to moderate climbing. Ride alongside beautiful streams while enjoying big mountain and valley views.  It's a fabulous way to see the Catskills up close!

If paddling is your thing you are in luck. The NYCDEP extended the reservoir boating season this year until the end of October.  We list the reservoirs that are open for recreational boating and how to prepare to paddle on them. We also recommend some perfect river paddling trips on the two branches of the Delaware River. Choose flatwater or rapids, kayak or canoe and see the world from a unique perspective.

Of course, you know we have hiking covered.  The Lark in the Park has always made sure that hikes are made available that meet the needs of just about everyone who wants to hit the trials. This year we list a set of hikes that range from accessible rail trails and easy strolls to moderate and serious climbs on some of the less traveled routes in the Catskills.  Visit the Fire Towers of the Catskills, head to an historic quarry, see century old structures and foundations or take in the fall wildflowers. Needless to say, fall hiking is spectacular and these hikes will make sure you experience it in all its glory.

CMC Hiking Trails Now Come with a Star!

What better time than now, when we're celebrating the Catskill Park, to launch a new hiking program for all who love trails and getting a gorgeous patch for hiking them?

The CMC recently launched a new hiking program that awards a beautiful embroidered patch to anyone who hikes all of the CMC's hiking trails.  We built them, we maintain them and we want you to enjoy them all.

So far just a few folks have qualified and they have unanimously praised the six trails. Each trail is rated either easy or moderate. More information about the program and the trails is available on the CMC website.  You can download the maps to your smartphone for free at Avenza Maps. Search for Catskill Mountain Club Trails Map Bundle.

A similar patch without the star (which signifies your achievement) is available for sale on our website.
Be vigilant about ticks when you are out enjoying the Catskills.  Ticks are very active at this time of year and remain active throughout the fall and winter any day where the temperature goes above freezing. Members are reporting finding ticks on themselves and their pets in greater than usual numbers.
  • Use a chemical repellent with DEET, permethrin or picaridin.
  • Wear light-colored protective clothing.
  • Tuck pant legs into socks.
  • Avoid tick-infested areas when possible. (Are there any? We're not so sure.)
  • Check yourself, your children, and your pets daily for ticks and carefully remove any.
  • Remove all hiking clothing and shower as soon after your outing as possible.
