Kia ora,

Firstly, sorry for sending two emails in one day, we certainly don’t want to clog up your inboxes but we felt following the Level 2 announcement, it was important to share the results of the quick survey the Council ran last week. It was fantastic to have so many of you engaging and sharing your views (nearly 20,000 responses!).

The Government has just announced that schools and centres will open fully under Alert Level 2 conditions on Monday 18th May. The feedback from the quick survey indicated that the majority of teachers feel they have sufficient time to develop processes to open safely, have the capacity for distance learning if required and feel supported and confident to continue to offer distance learning, as required.

Overall, you have shown you’re keen to return to work and get back to teaching, but naturally there are questions and concerns. Some common themes emerged from the quick survey, that we’ll be following up with the Ministry to ensure your voice is heard:

  • More guidance around maintaining distancing for gatherings like school assemblies
  • Preference for staggered start to the return and flexibility for principals and centre leaders to make decisions about their community and its needs
  • Availability of cleaning and safety equipment
  • High risk students and teachers (special requirements, older teachers)
  • Managing practical classes
  • Parents sending unwell learners
  • Technology
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Support for staff
  • Right not to return, be it learners or teachers
  • Parents access to the school/centre premises

A number of people said they hadn’t seen the Ministry of Education’s guidance. Please see their special early learning bulletin or the school bulletin.

We’re so proud of your ability to jump on board and commit to making Level 2 work. We know it’s not easy, but the agility the profession has shown is outstanding. We know you’re passionate about getting our tamariki back in the classroom and learning together. As brilliantly as you have adapted to online learning and supporting, it doesn’t replace being together face-to-face!

Ngā mihi
