    Lockdown Newsletter #1

11 May 2020

We are living in very trying times in a very different South Africa to the one before lock down. Some people are frustrated, some have lost their jobs and battle to feed their families, some have lost loved ones to the virus and some are the essential workers at the coalface of this pandemic facing the possibility of infection. For this we thank you.

For the rest of us it remains a  period of adjustment.  Adjustment to not being able to move freely in our streets as we did before, adjustment to the perpetual wearing of a mask when leaving your home, adjustment of trying to be a stand in teacher to your kids and the adjustment of standing in a long queue just to gain entrance to the supermarket!

Life as we know it has changed and will never be the same again.  This is not altogether a bad thing as we've learnt the value of family time, of home cooked meals, and ubuntu.

Let's aim to uphold these new values we've stumbled upon.  Once lock down is over, let's continue to share with the less fortunate and help them to grow stronger and more independent.

Once again, we wish you all well over this quarantine period.  Stay safe, wash your hands, sanitise and, most of all, have some fun!

Till next time...

Nicky and the team

  OUR SHOPS ARE OPEN

COMPETITION TIME

Every one who purchases something in one of our shops during the month of May goes into a lucky draw to win a R200 Help The Rural Child Gift Voucher to redeem at any of our charity shops.

All the necessary precautions with regard to the COVID-19 virus have and are being taken to safeguard your health and minimize any risk to our shoppers so come on down and have a browse.  We're sure you'll find something you like in the brand new stock that just been unpacked.

A word from Goedgedacht's Director

"My favourite place at Goedgedacht is the interfaith chapel. It represents the Goedgedacht values of human love for all, connection with the self, healing, and kindness. Being in the chapel reminds me of the pause that we are all taking, to think about what is the most important in our lives and how we want to move forward. I sincerely believe that the Goedgedacht interventions will prepare us for better days to follow. A heartfelt thank you to our loyal donors for your continued support.".

GOEDGEDACHT FEEDS RURAL COMMUNITIES

On the day before Lockdown, the staff from the Riebeeksrivier Pre-Primary School prepared food from all of the remaining food items at the school, and then distributed the food to the farms where it was needed the most.

Goedgedacht's community worker and their social worker used the opportunity to once again share information about COVID-19, how to prevent the spread of the virus, and handed out cakes of soap that were donated by Pick 'n Pay as well.

Goedgedacht is currently in partnership with the local municipality and other organisations that are also involved in food relief, preparing and distributing food into the local communities during this difficult time.
