Families Magazine

The ever popular Families Magazine (Thames Valley West), which usually distributes printed magazines via schools, nurseries and public places, has published an online edition for April & May.

This free digital magazine contains advice and downloadable resources — from mental health coping strategies to some ideas for educating and entertaining children at home. There is even a guide to the solar system with plans for building a family rocket and taking the children on a virtual trip to Mars!

Adders!

It’s the time of year when our only native venomous snake, the adder, is known to be active. Whilst in wooded areas, please keep to the paths and if you do let your dog off the lead then understand that adders live in the woodland area. They are also a protected species.

If you see one then admire it’s beauty and leave it in peace and remember adders will generally not attack unless they feel threatened

Exercising caution!

The roads might be quiet but our woodlands and meadows are now getting full use. For everyone’s safety and enjoyment we ask that:-

  • Cyclists, please ensure your bike has a bell, you let people know you are coming and pass people considerately.
  • Walkers are asked please to enable cyclists to pass and not to spread out across paths.
  •  If you are exercising pets and young children please ensure they are under control and that they do not present a crash hazard.

We have had reports of cyclists forcing pedestrians into hedges and verges and near collisions with loose animals which has prompted this request.

Everyone’s consideration for others would be appreciated and remember a friendly greeting is always better.

Car parks re-opening at country parks

Wokingham Borough Council is today (Wednesday 13 May) re-opening its country park car parks, with limited spaces at Dinton Pastures and California Country Parks.

At Dinton Pastures, the main Dinton car park, along with the Activity Centre and Aviation car parks are now open, providing 200 car parking spaces. To ensure visitor numbers remain manageable and aid social distancing, the overflow car parks will not open at this stage. The two main car parks will also open at California Country Park, providing 100 parking spaces. The overflow car parks will also remain closed at this site. Cafes, toilets and play areas will remain closed at both sites.

Cantley Park’s car park has also reopened today (May 13) and the smaller Countryside Service car parks at Rook’s Nest Woods and Keephatch Meadows will also re-open to the public. Heathlake is currently undergoing resurfacing work and will open at a later date.

Other activities that will open include day fishing which will start again at both sites. In addition, Disc Golf will also re-start on Lea Heath, and will be open to individuals and same family groups.

Social distancing marshals will be present at both country parks to encourage visitors to keep a safe 2 metre distance from one another. If the car parks are full, marshals will be waving cars to pass and not stop. Visitors are reminded to respect the marshals and to not park on nearby roads or side streets but to return at a quieter time to use the country park

Christian Aid Week

This week, 10-16 May, is Christian Aid Week. It’s usually a time when the members of the churches in Crowthorne come together to raise money for Christian Aid through a door to door envelope collection. This money is used to help families around the world to fight poverty and injustice.

Due to the restrictions in place to limit the spread coronavirus, fund raising this year is online. You can donate here to help support the work of Christian Aid.

RE3 facilities re-open from 18th May

The re3 recycling centres on Longshot Lane, Bracknell and Island Road, Reading will re-open on Monday (18 May) with a booking system in place.

An online booking system, ‘Click and Tip’ will open at 10am on Friday (15 May) and residents will be able to book a time slot via the link provided on the re3 website. Bookings will be available for slots from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, and residents can book up to seven days in advance.

Due to the limited number of booking slots available, with the sites only operating at 50 per cent of usual capacity, residents are urged to continue to safely store waste at home and only make a booking if the trip to the recycling centre is essential.

Things to remember when visiting the re3 sites at Longshot Lane and Smallmead:

  • You must make a booking before you visit the site. If you do not having a booking you will be refused entry.
  • Please bring proof of address that shows you are a resident of Bracknell Forest, Wokingham or Reading such as driving licence, a council tax bill or a utility bill and place it on your dashboard for staff to see.
  • You must arrive at the time of your booked slot.
  • You must come in the car for which you made your booking (identified by the number plate).
  • Visitors who come without a booking, outside of their booked slot, without a proof of residency or in a different car from the booking will be turned away.
  • The site will accept all usual items, including chargeable waste, so plan your visit when loading your car as it will help minimise the amount of time on site.
  • There may be delays accessing the site and possibly queues of waiting vehicles, so please have all your documents available.
  • Please be patient and follow the instructions of staff onsite at all times.
Squires Garden Centre on Heathlands Road is re-opening on Wednesday 13th May at 11am. It will be following the guidance on social distancing, and has revised opening hours:

Temporary Opening Hours from 13 May

Monday – Saturday 9am – 4pm
