"Think progress. Not perfection." - Ryan Holiday
Done Is Better Than Perfect

"Done is better than perfect" has become a strong new aphorism in my life.

(Side note: "aphorism" has become a strong new word in my vocabulary after searching for a smart word for "way to live.")

I find that quite often in my life I have many great ideas, and good intentions, of things that I want to be doing, should be doing, or could be doing. Yet for some reason they never come to fruition.

When I adopted my new mantra of "done is better than perfect" it was simply amazing how much more I was able to accomplish. Even more amazing was how happy I ended up being with the final product and the progress I was making. My "mediocre" progress was a billion times more satisfying than my non-existent progress.

A 1.5km run is a lot closer to a 5km run then a 0km run.
2-hours of studying/week is a lot closer to 8-hours/week than 0-hours/week.
Painting 1 wall is a lot closer to painting the entire house than painting no walls.

Procrastinating is an awful habit that makes me feel equally awful.
Being productive is an incredible habit that makes me feel equally incredible.

However, being productive is very often stalled out because of our desire to make everything perfect. We are usually our own worst critics and in turn our own worst enemies because we far too often hold ourselves back. Just start moving, focusing on small steps forward, and I know you will figure out the rest on the go.

My latest example is this newsletter, "The Rocker Mindset". I have had this idea for quite some time (over 2-years....yikes!) and knew it was always something I wanted to do. But here were some of my thoughts:

"I would like to be a better writer first."
"I wish I could communicate my thoughts more clearly."
"I really should start that newsletter, but I don't know if it will be good enough."
"What if no one reads it?"

What is ironic is that everything that I just said above is 100% true... because I didn't start moving. I was experiencing paralysis by analysis.

How could I ever become a better writer if I never write anything?
How can something ever be "good enough" if you've never done it?
Well no one can read it now... because it doesn't even exist! (Face palm emoji)

1 reader is a lot closer to 1000 readers than 0 readers.

If you want to grow, be more productive, evolve, improve, change, advance, or rise up, then it's very simple:

"Be satisfied with even the smallest progress." - Marcus Aurelius

And

"Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." - Voltaire
