ANTHC RESEARCH BROWN BAG - Wed May 20, 2020 @ Noon-1pm AKDT
Title:  "From Mice to Men: A Gnotobiotic Mouse Colorectal Cancer Model for Translational Research"
Presenter: Annette Wilson,  BS Chemistry, MS Toxicology (Forensics), PhD Toxicology Laboratory Manager
University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine (Gastorenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition)
Summary:  In humans, an intestinal microbiota composition associated with increased colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is modulated by a high fiber diet resulting in improved mucosal and metabolic markers of CRC risk. But it remains unclear, if a human gut microbiota shaped by fiber ultimately leads to reduced tumorigenesis in the colon. To target this question, we are performing a gnotobiotic (germ-free) mouse model to elucidate if changes in markers of CRC risk due to fiber supplementation also reduce risk of CRC development (tumor formation) in humans. The mouse model and preliminary results will be presented.
