New US Trade Rep reports cite piracy challenges and some successes
The Office of the United States Trade Representative has issued its latest editions of two annual reports. The 2020 “Special 301 Report” and 2019 'Notorious Markets' reports, which identify countries that inadequately protect or enforce intellectual property rights, describe how free trade zones may facilitate trade in counterfeit and pirated goods, and digital piracy, and identify some wins against piracy. CDSA / MESA: Four studios lose $100M to piracy over social media
The Content Delivery & Security Association, a community within the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance, reported a study by Videocites, which monitored infringing access to six movie releases over the course of 23 days, from March 20 through April 11. Piracy was spread over social media platforms, resulting in more than 6 million illicit views.. (More...)

WSJ: COVID-19 drives 30% jump in traffic to black-market TV
The Wall Street Journal reported that visits to illicit sites in the US and UK in March 2020 were up by about 31% and by more than 50% in Italy. Top pirate sites served 50% more fraudulent ads in the US and five European countries. Europol says that some pirates have been offering Covid-19 discounts.. (More...)

Europol & Eurojust: Hacker group busted for selling stolen online credentials
Polish and Swiss law enforcement authorities, supported by Europol and Eurojust, dismantled a hacking group involved in distributing stolen user credentials, creating and distributing malware and hacking tools, and fraud. The hackers created a sophisticated script to gain access to a large number of Swiss customer accounts. (More...)

CreativeFuture: Commerce prevails over rights-protection on Reddit
Reddit forums are not immune to piracy. CreativeFuture describes one case, in which stories stolen from a subreddit with 14 million users were used as narrations in videos posted to YouTube, which in turn attract advertising revenue. (More...)

ABI Research releases piracy forecast that may now be moot
In a Q1 2020 report announced last week, ABI Research forecasts that video providers will spend $172M on anti-piracy platforms in 2021, rising to $229M in 2024; about 10% of the overall market opportunity for video security technologies. But it's increasingly clear that forecasts made before the coronavirus pandemic took hold may grossly understate the size and nature of the risks as the pandemic plays out. (More...)

Europol reminds us of the risks of illegal streaming
Europol has posted a ‘one-stop shop’ of useful information about the impact of coronavirus on criminal activity and cybercrime, which includes a checklist of risks that can befall consumers who access illegal streaming sites. They say that pirates are among those “exploiting our fears around the COVID-19 pandemic." (More...)
