Jekka's Tips For Sustainable Gardening

Gardening has not held such a significant place in our hearts since the war effort 'Dig for Victory' but this time the emphasis is more about growing plants for your health & well-being. Gardening combined with the current decrease in transport pollution and a large drive to support local economies has also had a positive impact on our environment and the global climate.

However, this has done nothing to cool the overall climate and scientists are predicting that we are install for more frequent extreme events, including both downpours and heatwaves, for which we need to adapt. Can we use current events to drive a more sustainable world? Read Jekka's latest guide on climate change and sustainability, which lists some actions gardeners & horticulturists can take as well as herbs that can be grown in our changing climate.

Jekka's Seeds For May

It is often incorrectly believed that the sowing season is short and seeds should only be sown in early spring. Jekka's blog on what to sow in the winter should be testament to the fact that you can sow seeds all year round.

Jekka's top seeds to sow now are:

  • Basils: we are sowing are Basils for summer in the glass house and under protection.
  • Parsley: both Curly and French Parsley are perfect to now sow outdoors in a pot or directly into the earth.
  • Dill: if, like us, you have over harvested your spring sowings, now you can sow your second crop.
We are also looking ahead to the autumn and wondering what we would like to eat. Jekka's tip is that it is now the time to sow your hardy perennials which will then be available to take you through the winter, for example: thyme, rosemary and sage.

Jekka's Herb of the Month: Angelica

Jekka's Herb of the Month is Angelica (Angelica archangelica) which has often been the star of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It is also great for pollinators and birds and has been linked with curing the plague. Find out more in Jekka's new blog through the link below.

Angelica is a wonderful culinary herb where every bit of it is edible. It is used to reduce the acidity of fruit, as a key botanical in the making of gin and as a decorative confectionery. A word of warning, please be certain your plant is Angelica as its appearance is similar to several poisonous species.
