Thank you for signing up to our recent webinars. We hope you enjoyed Anand Menon's seminar on the state of Brexit during coronavirus pandemic and Meera Selva's webinar about COVID-19's threat to press freedom worldwide. If you weren't able to join us (or if you want a quick recap), here's a summary of our conversations and a few resources you may find helpful in the months ahead.

🏡 We are holding webinars next week again on Wednesday and Thursday. See you then.

OUR RESEARCH WEBINAR

How COVID-19 is threatening press freedom worldwide

The issue. For World Press Freedom Day, Meera Selva wrote an article for our website saying "the pandemic has intensified existing pressures on journalists and created new threats. It has exposed every single weakness in an already fractured business model, and has highlighted how trust in journalism is key to the media’s future."

Our webinar. Meera, the Director of the Journalist Fellowship Programme, outlined some of these new threats that have emerged during the pandemic including the idea of ‘unpatriotic’ reporting and misuse of travel restriction and freedom of information laws. Some of our global cohort of Journalist Fellows, and others joined Meera to share their on-the-ground experiences.

OUR WEDNESDAY SEMINAR

Brexit in a time of crisis

The seminar. This week we continued with our Business and Practice of Journalism Seminar Series with Anand Menon, Director of UK in a Changing Europe and Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King's College London. He talked about how the Brexit negotiations could be derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The takeaway. Anand said: "Lots of people in government who would normally have been working on Brexit have been moved away to deal with the pandemic." He discussed the prospects for pan-European and global solidarity in light of coronavirus, and the dangers of Brexit talks breaking down.

The series. This seminar was the second of this term's series on the business and practice of journalism, chaired by Meera Selva. You can sign up for the next events in this link
