Studio News

Life has changed drastically since I last wrote you.

Like all of us, I have been navigating the losses and opportunities of this moment. While I had been so looking forward to an April residency at MacDowell, as well as leading workshops in New York, Michigan, and The Berkshires, they’re not to be, for now. On the bright side, more time has opened up to help private students develop their projects and to lead small poetry circles.

Kripalu is closed indefinitely.  Updates appear on their website. When things shift, I’ll let you know my teaching and presenting schedule.  Meanwhile, my website is updated frequently.
I have some happy news to share. The fourth edition of my textbook for writing students, The Practice of Creative Writing, will be out on September 16, 2020. I’ve worked for two years on this project, updating the course and content so that it fits nicely into online classrooms as well as traditional face-to-face. Fresh features include brand new readings with a focus on micro and flash forms and interviews with writers on their work habits and creative process. Och Gonzalez is one of my faves. There’s also a robust guide for instructors using the book. I’m so proud of this new edition.
And it’s been hard to concentrate on reading—much less writing—when things are so extraordinarily challenging in our own homes and communities, most especially for the vulnerable.

But I’ve managed some wonderful reading. Highly recommended: The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. It’s a perfect book. Just exquisite.  Sit back –stay in your jammies—and be delighted.
I’m taking a class on Julian of Norwich online at St. Bart’s, my church when I’m in NYC. What a treat to be able to participate now, from afar. To that end, I’m enjoying Laughing at the Devil by Amy Laura Hall. And, I’m reading Rebecca Solnit’s brilliant Recollections of My Nonexistence alongside Barbara Brown Taylor’s An Altar in the World. Highly recommend.

Write some small thing.
Be well.
Keep in touch.
