As we move into our 7th week of social distancing we are flattening the spread of COVID!
As of today, the doubling time for COVID infection has increased to every 20 days from every 16 days last week. Governments are loosening restrictions on activities in an attempt to balance health outcomes with economic ones.
Controversial discussions about “herd immunity” (resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population, resulting from a sufficiently high proportion of individuals developing immunity to the disease) are countered by rebuttals about the unacceptable number of serious hospitalizations and deaths that would occur with this approach. To begin to achieve herd immunity 70% of the word population would need to be infected with the virus. If the present death rate of 1% is applied to these numbers 55 million people would have to die. Today the number of deaths in the world is 263,000. Also, using the present stats that 10% of the COVID infected population need hospitalization, these numbers will overwhelm every country's ability to respond with critical care and ventilation support.
The need to develop an anti-COVID vaccine has never been greater. As we learned with the Spanish flu (1918) social distancing will remain the basis for disease prevention until we have a vaccine.
Below we have gathered a potpourri of original information. Included are interviews, updated info on COVID testing kits, updated self assessments, information for parents with kids, new mental health resources, and finally theatrical and musical creative efforts. Check them out.
Stay vigilant, stay well, and continue to distance socially.
