Welcome to 3 Point Thursday!

Each week I'll send you the three most compelling ideas, facts, studies and/or products related to nutrition, health and wellness that I have to share.

In light of the global situations that are bringing up undeniable emotions in us all, as well as the powerful and emotionally charged full "flower" super moon in the water sign of Scorpio that graces us today, I'd like to dedicate today's points to the supreme expression of emotionality:

Crying.

Evolutionary biology views crying as a highly evolved behavior - and the many benefits of crying further our evolution and enhance our health.
Here are a few:

  • Natural Pain Killer
Crying not only releases tears, but oxytocin, endogenous opioids and endorphins as well, which ease pain and begin to even out the stress we're feeling.
This is why sometimes after we cry, especially if we cry for a while, we feel a bit numb. It's part of the natural physiological process of bringing our emotional systems back into homeostasis (balance).
  • Calm the storm
Crying activates our parasympathetic nervous systems. When our parasympathetic nervous systems activate, our whole physiology softens and relaxes, allowing more composure and clarity to permeate, instead of the stress we felt previously.
This is how vulnerability, feeling and expressing our feelings, is powerful - and how it allows us to act in our power.
  • Surrender to release
Because crying literally blurs our vision, it lowers our defenses, making it a sign of submission, of surrender. Acts of surrender toward natural influences, accepting and moving through rather than resisting "what is", are incredibly healing.
The trick is to intentionally surrender to our emotions and allow them to heal us. This involves the conscious belief that emoting with tears, sobs, gasps, moans, whatever takes shape, is a blessing, a beautiful release that will benefit us in mind, body, spirit and lift us out of the overwhelm we feel.

Many people apologize, feel shame, try to stop, or fully block the urge to cry all together, and while this is unfortunately what many of us were taught was safest to do, it is incorrect from a physiological stand point.

Stifling the expression of our feelings is quite damaging for our overall health. When we do not allow emotions to come through, the stress does not just dissolve on its own.
Instead, the body must take on the burden of unreleased stress by storing the stifled emotion. These suppressed, then stored emotions build up and eventually present as dis-ease of some kind.

Age and gender are, of course, completely irrelevant. If you are a human being, you have the stress-release mechanism of crying at your disposal to enhance your acute and ongoing physical and mental health.

We are all grieving in one way or another at this time..
We are experiencing deaths and endings of so many aspects of life as we know it.
We are also making way for, and perhaps already greatly experiencing the new, the fresh, the greater good, the truth...
To clear the path for all this, let us allow the nature of our beautiful emotions to take form for our benefit, and let us encourage and support others through this process as well.
