AIS-Salzburg Newsletter

Dear AIS-Salzburg Community,

Here in Salzburg, things are getting back to normal quickly with all stores able to open now, restaurants in one week, and the local swimming pools at the end of the month.  One can almost hear the general sigh of relief coming from the millions of Austrians who maintained the lockdown requirements strictly and with remarkable discipline.  There's even talk of beginning the process of opening the borders with neighboring countries and the first boarder has returned to pick up their possessions.  Although things may not get back to the pre-crisis 'normal' for some time, a bit of 'normality' is certainly welcome!

Take care and continue to help out.

Alumni Interview: Alejandro Morera Alvarez

In September of 2017, Alejandro was one of those rare students who joined our school in their senior year. A native of Mexico, Alejandro had never been away from his family and friends for more than a month when he decided to enrol at AIS-Salzburg and put himself out of his "comfort zone" in order to better prepare for University Studies abroad.

"After living a year abroad, studying at a university in a foreign language was similar in many ways and thus adapting to this new situation, meeting new people, and getting used to a new culture was rather easy compared to what it would have been without the international experience AIS-Salzburg provided," responded Alejandro in this recent interview.

Alejandro is currently a student at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), studying his 4th Semester of Engineering Science. He has the goal of graduating at the top of his class and eventually starting his own tech company.

A Video Tour of Our Campus

We are proud to showcase our intimately small school, featuring 10 classrooms and three floors of boarding facilities.  Also in this video is the amazing, off-campus Olympic training facility that we have had the luxury of using for over 30 years. It features an indoor and outdoor track, four soccer pitches including a turf field, three beach volleyball courts, an indoor Olympic size pool, an outdoor street hockey court, three indoor basketball and volleyball courts, a gymnastics room with foam pit, a bouldering wall and a weight room.

Hidden Salzburg: Altstadt Tank Scratch

The Altstadt (Old City) of Salzburg, squeezed between the Mönchberg hill and the Salzach River, is well-known worldwide.  As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually (if not so many presently...).  It's baroque churches, Italianate squares and narrow, intimate gassen (passages) are a joy to explore.  However, if you walk across the river on the central Staatsbrücke (State Bridge), you will find yourself at the head of the Linzergasse in the Rechtsseitigen Altstadt (Right Old City).  There, you may or not be aware of a curious reminder of the spring of 1945 when U.S. Army troops entered the city of Salzburg and the war came to an end for the people here.

Just to the right of the Platzl Square at the head of the Linzergasse, turn right and you enter the Steingasse.  This is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Salzburg and a hidden gem.   If you walk approximately 50 meters up the Steingasse to the corner where the building that presently contains Das Kino is located, you'll find an odd area of the right-hand wall left without plaster or paint and deeply scarred.  You may wonder why this unsightly scratch was never replastered and painted again in this very historic street.  The answer may surprise you.

U.S. troops of the 3rd Infantry Division entered and liberated Salzburg on the 4th of May,1945— 75 years ago this spring.  At some point shortly thereafter, a patrol of troops mounted on a Sherman tank entered the Steingasse and...  became completely stuck there between the thick walls of the medieval buildings.  So stuck, in fact, that they had to use blowtorches to trim the tank to get it back out.  Today, you can make out the shape of the Sherman tank and the deep gouging into the stone wall made by the tank's tracks.  It is uncertain or undocumented as to why this 'tank scratch' in the Steingasse has been preserved for 75 years; perhaps as a reminder.  Or, perhaps, as memory of times gone by when light at the end of a long tunnel was first seen.

As we continue to improve our online presence over the past months, we are proud to announce that a major piece of that objective is completed with the launching of our new website yesterday. There are still some bugs to work out (currently a login pop-up appears) and some tweaking to be done, but the functionality of the website is in place and the ease of navigation vastly improved.
