Dear folks,
In both 1 Corinthians 6:12 and 10:23, Paul says, “’All things are lawful for me,’ but not all things are beneficial.” As we continue to garner excitement at the possibility of the State of Oregon opening up, Bishop Laurie Larson Caesar (Bishop of the Oregon Synod) reminds us in her latest newsletter
(found here), that we must still care for our neighbors. Bishop Elaine Stanovsky (UMC Bishop of the Greater Northwest) keeps reminding us that we must continue to “love God, love others, and do no harm.” (Bishop's statement found here).

Our congregations will continue to meet virtually in a combined worship at 10 a.m.'s on Sunday mornings until after June 1, even if Marion County has been given permission to enter into Phase 1. If the Bishops (both UMC & ELCA) determine that it is not safe to return to worship, we will trust their leadership. Both Church Council leadership teams from Trinity and SUMC will be working with myself and the staff to develop a clearly Phased plan for when we return to in-person worship. When we do, we cannot go back to only in-person worship, and we will need to have some kind of hybrid worship experience so that we can reach the most vulnerable people in our church communities.

Already, the Oregon Synod released today its plan for churches.
(Click hereWe expect a similar guide from the Greater Northwest Area of the United Methodist Church to be published by Wednesday (Click here for resources).

As our congregations make these plans, know that your staff and Church Councils are pondering meaningful questions including:
  1. What do we do well?
  2. How are we connecting people in worship/studies? (Do we know of folks who need intentional technical support?)
  3. How can we collaborate with people in our community in creative ways? (Schools, ASAP, SACA, Sheltering Silverton, etc.)
  4. What habits are we relying on that we need to let go of?
  5. How can we free up resources (money, people, time) so they can shift toward the new realities?
  6. What do we do with the people and resources that we have to create something meaningful for both current members and community members?
Pray with me: for our two churches, our Staff as we live into these new realities, pray for the new collaborations that this will open up, and pray for each other that the grace and love of God will reign in our hearts as we love God, love others, and do no harm.

A Note About our Finances
The church continues to be thankful for your generous support of our Church ministries efforts in our local Church, the community and around the world. This is a unique time in the life of our Church as we shelter at home and have online Worship services. We greatly appreciate your continued financial support of all our ministry areas.
The opportunity for you to financially support the work of our Church continues in the following ways:
  • You may mail your contributions to the church as usual.
  • You may drop by the church office anytime when you are out getting groceries in the mail slot.
  • You may continue or begin online giving that you have already set up through your bank.
  • Give ONLINE!! Here is the link: Online Giving (By the way, check out the look of our  Website – its still a work in progress, so be grace-filed!).
If you would like to set up an online giving account, the best way to do it is to go to your bank and set up the regular monthly giving amount and the date of the payment to be withdrawn from your account.  If you have questions or need additional information feel free to contact the church office at sumcoffice1@wavecable.com or (503) 873-6517.
