We're changing our newsletter for a short period. All our activities that are continuing have been moved online. Out of an abundance of caution, we're keeping links to those events on a Partners-only password-protected page. So announcements in this newsletter will not have links. We hope and expect to send you something closer to normal soon. Thank you for your patience in this unusual time.

The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region's Jewish Family Service has launched an Emergency Assistance Fund to help those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to matching support from an anonymous donor and our partners at The Jewish Community Foundation of the West, as well as a significant gift from Women of B'nai Israel, JFS is able to offer qualified applicants assistance with basic needs, including prescription medication, childcare costs, housing and utility payments and transportation. Assistance is also available for those experiencing food insecurity through Federation's Virtual Kosher Food Pantry.

Get Involved with a Havurah
A Havurah is a small group of CBH partners who gather together (virtually for now, real time for later) on a regular basis. The group may be primarily social and may or may not be centered around Jewish holidays. Groups can be formed based on common interests and life stages or may be diverse. It is up to each group. CBH can provide contact information and match partners with common interests. CBH can also assist during the formation stage. Once formed, partners decide together on activities and how often to meet. Havurot (plural of Havurah) are an important part of the Reform Jewish Community and a good way to keep people connected. Please contact havurah@bethaverim.org or the office if you are interested is being part of a Havurah. Please also contact us if you are part of an ongoing Havurah; we’d like to know which partners are involved and hear about your successes and simchas. We are looking forward to more community-building at CBH.

ADULT EDUCATION
Upcoming Tuesdays at 2:00 Events, from the Adult Education Committee and Rabbi Greg

May 12: Rabbi Cynthia Hoffman
The Ba’al Shem Tov (also known as Besht) was a Jewish mystic and healer from Poland, who is regarded as the founder of Hasidic Judaism. Besht has influenced all Judaism with his emphasis on JOY. There are many legends and we will study some of the earliest stories; some of these stories make no sense but they’re fun to think about. Rabbi Cynthia Hoffman was ordained at Aleph and lives in Davis. We look forward to learning with her more often.

May 19: Gail Gutierrez-McDermid on the Conversos
CBH Partner Gail Guitierrez-McDermid will return for a second part of her discussion on Conversos: what was going on in Spain for this situation to develop, the problems Conversos created in the Spanish and Jewish world, and the role of Conversos in the New World. (We got up to the 12th century already in the hugely successful prior talk so join us to explore subsequent periods.)

May 10, 5:00 pm: Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, live-streaming from Florence, Italy

In this one-time-only, live-streamed musical event, you will experience some of America's greatest songs, such as "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Puttin' on the Ritz," and so many more in a musical event that has been performed in theatres throughout the nation and abroad. Hershey Felder is a pianist, actor, and playwright known for his portrayals of classical and American composers on the theatrical stage. Felder was born on July 9, 1968, to Jacob Felder and Eva Surek Felder. Felder's upbringing in a Jewish family included Eastern European Jewish traditions. Felder moved to Los Angeles in 1994, working briefly for the USC Shoah Foundation, interviewing Holocaust survivors to preserve their oral histories on film. The following year, he attended the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in Poland, which led to his creation of a one-man show, George Gershwin Alone.

On May 10, 2020 (Mother's Day), the production company Hershey Felder Presents will live stream Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, a musical event set to benefit 13 theatres and arts organizations across the United States as they work to offset the devastating economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
