Nonprofit Needs & Advocacy Opportunity

Date: Friday, May 15
Time 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. 
 
Sector leaders will convene elected officials and local nonprofit leaders at this Nonprofit Legislative Advocacy Forum to share research gathered by NICNE about the reported current and anticipated impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nonprofits in Northern Illinois, engage in moderated discussion around nonprofit needs during COVID-19, and share information about local funding opportunities and resources for nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit leaders, this an opportunity for you to interact directly with decision makers in our community and share information about the impact of COVID-19 on your organization, discuss what you need to continue to serve your program participants during the pandemic, and to survive and recover from this crisis.

The forum will be moderated by Pamela Clark Reidenbach, Executive Director, NICNE and Linda Sandquist, Vice President, United Way of Rock River Valley.

Grants for Emergency Food and Shelter
in Winnebago County Available Through the
United Way of Rock River Valley

Winnebago County will receive $162,185 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs and an additional $231,229 of supplemental funds under the CARES Act. EFSP funds are made available by the Department of Homeland Security. 

A Local Board, consisting of representatives from local nonprofit human service agencies, governmental entities, and the community at large will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in Winnebago County and is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds made available under this phase of the program,

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying service providers in Winnebago County are urged to apply.

Public or private agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds may access an application from the United Way of Rock River Valley website at www.unitedwayrrv.org/EFSP.
 

Completed applications must be received no later than 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2020. Email applications to lindac@unitedwayrrv.org or mail to:

Please note: To increase the likelihood of a successful application, agencies are encouraged to apply to both Phase 37 and Phase CARES. These can be duplicate applications, or the Phase 37 application can be the primary application with the Phase CARES application providing additional needed dollars. If the applications are duplicates of each other, you must mark the duplicate check box on each application. National EFSP requires that a separate application be submitted for each Phase.

Please note: Phase CARES funds were awarded as a response to the COVID-19 impact on our community, however use of funds does not have to be tied directly to a COVID-19-related economic hardship.

Resources for Managing Your PPP Loan

If you have applied for and received a PPP Loan, you may be breathing a sigh of relief, but there is still a lot of work left to be done to manage your loan, and ensure that you can secure the maximum loan forgiveness. 

Nonprofit Quarterly is offering a webinar on Thursday, May 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Managing a Paycheck Protection Program Loan Effectively.  

This webinar is for nonprofit financial leaders who have received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan or expect to in the near future. Many are wondering: “now what?” How do I manage this loan properly, and very importantly, how do I get it forgiven?

In this session, Gina McDonald, CPA of FMA will share detailed guidance for nonprofit leaders, including:

  • how organizations can and cannot spend the funds
  • how to properly account for and track the funds
  • what we know to-date about how forgiveness will be calculated
  • strategies for what to do if a portion of the loan was not needed
  • other decisions related to PPP that organizations may need to make (e.g., how will this funding interact with restricted revenue that has been received).

As the pandemic lingers and the months stack up, Americans are increasingly willing to venture out of their homes — even if where they live is technically still under lockdown. According to a University of Maryland research project that leverages anonymous cell phone data to track social distancing compliance, last week social distancing declined by three percent.

That project’s lead researcher, Lei Zhang, says this indicates a “premature loosening of social distancing behavior” and is driven by “quarantine fatigue.”

Even if you personally haven’t experienced quarantine fatigue, you’ve likely encountered sentiments attached to the experience. Generally, it’s defined by restlessness and frustration. It’s prompted by the fact that stay-at-home orders have extended beyond what people were mentally prepared to do. And it’s a trend that’s splitting the country. Read more here. Inverse (5.10.20)

Meet State Mandated Sexual Harassment
Training Requirements

Sexual Harassment Training: Recognition, Reporting, and Prevention with Samuel J. Castree, Jr.

 

Date: Tuesday, June 2nd

Companies are now required to provide annual workplace training on how to recognize and prevent sexual harassment or face hefty fines under a new state law (SB 75) that took effect on January 1. The mandate is part of an omnibus bill called the Workplace Transparency Act, which Illinois lawmakers passed in response to the growing number of sexual misconduct allegations being made in a variety of industries. 

 

Our interactive training program addresses all Illinois mandated topics, including an explanation of sexual harassment, examples of sexual harassment, and a summary of federal and Illinois sexual harassment laws. We also incorporate EEOC harassment training best practices by introducing and discussing topics such as civility in the workplace, and bystander intervention. This training is appropriate for all staff at your organization. Attend this training to comply with state law and learn important information about sexual harassment.

What types of conduct are prohibited in the workplace?
What should I do if I am being harassed?
The importance of civility in the workplace
