Plagiarism Across Europe and Beyond 2020

By Dr Zeenath Reza Khan

ENAI's 6th International Conference Plagiarism Across Europe and Beyond 2020 was organized this April and hosted by University of Wollongong in Dubai.
PAEB has always been a platform for all our members and delegates to come together, share ideas, research, enjoy networking and experience unique cultures. This year was no different - although, this year there was a major twist. Owing to COVID-19 everything happened in the digital space! University of Wollongong in Dubai pulled off the first fully virtual conference for ENAI. More than 100 delegates and participants attended nearly 50 presentations, poster sessions and workshops, 2 keynote speeches, 2 invited talks, one executive panel discussion and 2 post-conferene workshops by partnering campuses the British University in Dubai and Gulf Medical University Ajman.
The program was power-packed and rich in content - research contributions and ensuing discussions. The virtual conference had unique "room" names for each session such as Al Abra, Al Fahidi, Majboos, Burj Khalifa and many more giving delegates a flavour of Dubai and glimpses into its culture.
It wasn't all work either! The conference also offered a virtual gala dinner too! The evening included “any” course meal delegates wished to prepare for themselves from the comfort of their homes, traditional Arabic music, fun quiz about Dubai and ENAI, and gave out best “dressed” and “most creative dinner plate” prizes with nine Amazon voucher winners virtually walking away proudly from the evening. A happy, inclusive evening where delegates got into the mood and participated in all the fun and frolic was the setting for the announcement of this year's ENAI awards too!
The conference was sponsored by Gold sponsors Turnitin, Studiosity, PlagScan, Epigeum - Oxford University Press, Silver sponsor URKUND, and supported by SpringerNature and Dubai Tourism.

A special thank you to the organizing team - Priyanka, Salma, Irene, Jefin, Swathi, Atharv, Chris, Pavel, Stephen, Dita, Jana, and Veronika  for outstanding show of courage and organizing a unique experience in the form of a virtual ENAI conference for all of us.

ENAI Annual General Meeting 2020

By Dr Tomáš Foltýnek

On Friday 16th of April 2020, just before the 6th conference Plagiarism across Europe and Beyond, we held the Annual General Meeting of ENAI. For the first time the AGM was held virtually, same as the conference. Out of 32 member institutions, 23 were present at the meeting, together with 6 individual supporters and guests.

The AGM adopted the Annual report for 2019 and discussed ENAI’s activities during the first three years of operation. Then came the most important part of the meeting – elections of the Board and Auditing group. We had 7 candidates for 5 places in the Board and 3 candidates for 3 places in the Auditing group. We used Qualtrics for anonymous internet voting, and here are the results:
  1. Tomáš Foltýnek (23 votes)
  2. Salim Razi (21 votes)
  3. Sonja Bjelobaba (18 votes)
  4. Július Kravjar (18 votes)
  5. Inga Gaižauskaitė (17 votes)
  6. Rajko Golović (10 votes)
  7. Dilbar Gimranova (5 votes)
The first five were elected to the ENAI Board for the tenure of 22nd of May 2020 – 21st of May 2023. Rajko Golović and Dilbar Gimranova are substitutes in case any of the elected members terminate their membership. The Board will meet during the next month and elect the President and Vice-president.

Elections to the Auditing group were easy as the number of candidates were equal to the number of places. Thus, we elected all three candidates: Milan Ojsteršek, Shiva Sivasubramaniam and Zeenath Reza Khan. The auditing group will meet in the next month and elect the Head of the group.

After the elections, the meeting focused on the future of ENAI. We adopted the proposed budget for 2021 keeping the membership fees at the same level (300 EUR per year for institutional members and 50 EUR per year for individual supporters). With an increasing number of member institutions, more money will be available to support the activities of working groups.

The AGM approved the proposed hosts and organisers of future ENAI events:
  • National University of Public Service, represented by Gabor Laszlo, will organise an ENAI training event in Budapest in 2021. The exact date is 25th – 26th of March 2021.
  • University of Porto, represented by Laura Ribeiro, together with Mendel University in Brno and ENAI, will organise the 8th European Conference on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism in Porto in 2022. The exact dates are to be confirmed, but provisionally in March 2022.
  • University of Derby, represented by Shiva Sivasubramaniam, together with Mendel University in Brno, Coventry University and ENAI, will organise the 9th European Conference on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism in Derby in 2023. The exact dates are to be confirmed, but provisionally in April 2023.
The 7th European Conference on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism takes place in Vienna from 22nd – 24th September 2021 and is jointly organised by University of Music and Performing Arts, Mendel University in Brno and ENAI.

Discussion on future activities of ENAI identified two important topics, which we are not addressing sufficiently yet. This led to the establishment of two new working groups:
  • ENAI Outreach chapter will focus on inclusion of institutions from outside Europe, who may need the same kind of support as ENAI is providing to its European members. We already have members from Turkey, UAE, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh. We acknowledge that differences in educational systems may require adaptations to existing ENAI resources for use outside Europe. Zeenath Reza Khan has agreed to lead the working group. The group should ensure that our activities are coordinated with the efforts of ICAI and that we are not seen as competing with them.
  • The ENAI Student wing will focus on inclusion of students to ENAI’s activities and events. We all agreed that students are central to everything ENAI is doing and we should listen to their views. To lead this working group, we could not appoint anyone better than a representative of the European Student Union, Rajko Golović.
If anyone wants to join these working groups, please contact the respective heads.

The leaders of two existing working groups have decided to step down. The first is Litsa Mourelatos, who did an amazing job in establishing the ENAI Awards. There are still some challenges in designing a stable set of ENAI Award categories, so the working group is looking for a new head. The working group for ENAI promotion and public relations, which has been led by Jana Dannhoferová also needs a new leader. Although great progress has been made so far in marketing and promoting ENAI, this is an important area for future development. We need to be active on more social media and increase our outreach in Europe. And, we are not only looking for leaders. If anyone is interested in being a member of these fantastic and very valuable groups, please let us know. A big thanks Litsa and Jana for their efforts and the great results they achieved.

The new Board was tasked to resolve questions and develop strategies based on items raised at the 2019 AGM in Vilnius, which the current Board did not have capacity to work on. The Board should prepare an overall ENAI strategy, marketing strategy, design a scheme for small research grants for member institutions and propose a policy on our relationship with commercial companies and event sponsors. The new Board, together with the heads of the working groups will explore ways for the ENAI centre to support activities of working groups and the wider membership.

ENAI has made fantastic progress since its establishment just three years ago. Thanks to the Board, Auditing group, leaders and members of working groups and to other individuals and organisations that supported us. Let us all wish that the next three years are at least as successful as the first three.

ENAI Award 2020 Winners

ENAI Awards 2020 for service to academic integrity go to Dr. Tracey Bretag, Dr. Irene Glendinning and Mr. Stefan-Marius Deaconu. The winners were announced on Saturday 18th April 2020 at the 6th International Conference Plagiarism across Europe and Beyond.
A short summary about the awards can be found bellow and all details are contained in a press release.

ENAI Student Award for innovation and leadership at the student level
Conferred for the first time, the Student Award found its worthy recipient in Stefan-Marius Deaconu, who triumphed against three other very worthy candidates, namely Ms. Veronika Králíková of Mendel University, Brno Czechia; Ms. Priyanka Hemnani of University of Wollongong in Dubai, UAE; and Mr. Giga Khositashvili of Ilia State University, Georgia.

ENAI Member Award for significant, innovative or ground-breaking contributions in advancement of academic integrity core values, goals, and/or culture change
The ENAI Member Award was received by Dr. Irene Glendinning – Academic Manager for Student Experience at Coventry University U.K., who needs little introduction within the ENAI community, serving not only as the organisation’s Vice President 2017-20 but also due to her significant contributions through AI advisory groups regionally, nationally and internationally.

Lifetime Achievement Award: recognizing exceptional Courage, Perseverance, or Leadership in the service of integrity
Professor in the School of Management, University of South Australia, Tracey Bretag receives the honorable distinction of Lifetime Achievement Award, conferred for the first time by ENAI.
There is little that needs to be said of an individual who is selected as one of the “People of the Year: Who Mattered in Higher Education in 2019” by Times Higher Education.
But for us at ENAI, there is a lot more to be said – and seen – which we invite you to do by leafing through  this booklet, created by a few of her appreciative colleagues and friends.

Outreach Working Group

By Dr Zeenath Reza Khan
As a community of passionate researchers, academics and professionals, we are an amazing collective point of expertise and resources that we can use to support the greater community of educators and students. The motivation behind forming this working group is to develop a support system through outreach activities targetting individuals, institutions and students from lesser developed economies.
UN Sustainable Goals 4 states that education is for all and there should be absolute accessibility and inclusivity in education. It is no longer a choice for the few, but a right of the masses. Academic integrity being the foundation upon which education stands, is key to ensuring the learning process, the knowledge imparted and the skills taught are infused with the values of fairness, courage, truth-fullness, trustworthiness, respect, honesty and responsibility. By extension then, it becomes incumbent on us as a community, if we truly believe education is for all, that upholding integrity in education is also for all.
With globalization, student mobility and fluidity of knowledge sharing, our classrooms are packed with students from diverse backgrounds, just as our faculty represent their strong educational and cultural backgrounds from various parts of the world. Therefore ENAI working group aims to work together with like-minded members to develop strategies to provide accessibility of resources, training, advice and expertise to institutions, individuals and students to help establish culture of integrity beyond borders.
If you would like to become member of this working group, please contact Zeenath Reza Khan.

Dilemma Game

You might be familiar with the Dilemma Game by the Erasmus University Rotterdam, a card game that is played in different (classroom) settings to help foster awareness of integrity dilemmas and stimulate an open and critical discussion of integrity and professionalism in research. The game contains 75 dilemmas that have been collected at our university, and has been widely played, both within and outside of our university.

The authors are currently developing an app that will function as an innovative research integrity training and awareness tool. The app will have additional functionalities to the card game. For example, the researcher will now also be confronted individually with new dilemmas that will be periodically uploaded to the game (and he/she can vote on a preferred choice, and see what others voted). Also, the game will be available for use in classroom settings (from small to large groups), at any place and any time. The authors expect to be able to launch the app in the summer of 2020.

The app will be made freely available to the (international) research community, the authors are currently looking for ways to make the game and the new integrity dilemmas even more relevant for researchers today. Therefore, they are currently collecting dilemmas by sharing this form with all researchers in our community.
It would be much appreciated if you could contribute by sharing the form, so that there is more input for the content of the app, and therewith make the app relevant to more researchers.

If you have any other suggestions, ideas, questions, or possibilities of contributing to the success of this open initiative, please do not hesitate to contact Mathieu van Kooten.
We will approach you with the regular newsletter in June 2020.
