Making humans better writers and writers better humans since 1997.

Dear Fellow Grubbies,

I’m writing with an important update about GrubStreet’s headquarters at 162 Boylston Street. As most of you know, we are currently in the process of building a new home in the Seaport. We had been hoping to stay at 162 Boylston until our new creative writing center is complete. However, we have recently learned that the owners of 162 Boylston Street are planning to sell the building and are therefore no longer open to extending our lease on a month-to-month basis beyond June.

The logistical impact of this is minimized by our recent decision to continue operating remotely for the foreseeable future. But we will dearly miss our home of eight years: the red couches, the tiny elevator, the lending library in the hallway, and the theater in the basement (that we always suspected was haunted). Our community transformed 162 from rented space into a true home for writers with our poems, stories, and friendships.

As writers, this is not the first plot twist we’ve seen. But it’s not all bad news. Thankfully it clarifies the road ahead and adds further meaning to the task of building our new center. We’ll have triple the space, a community lounge — with new red couches — a podcast studio, a cafe and a stage. How sweet and profound it will be to gather there together as soon as we are able.

In the meantime, here are a few key updates:
  • As planned, all upcoming classes will be held remotely via video conferencing and online. If you have access to the Internet, you can write with Grub from the comfort of your home until it’s safe for us all to meet in person again. This includes all adult classes and teen classes. The GrubStreet staff will also continue working remotely during this time. When Massachusetts decides that it’s safe for non-essential businesses to reopen, and when our community feels comfortable to meet in person, we will update you with new plans. Until then, stay tuned.
  • Effective June 1st, GrubStreet will no longer be located at 162 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. All regular mail can be sent to PO Box 418, Arlington, MA 02476. At this time, we cannot accept mail or packages delivered to our PO Box via any service other than USPS (i.e. Fed Ex, UPS). For further questions, please contact info@grubstreet.org
  • As soon as the restrictions on construction are lifted and it is safe to start the work, we will begin construction for our new center at 50 Liberty Drive. Everything is ready to go — we’re just waiting for the green light to get started. Though we are anticipating some delays, we’re still planning to move into our new space this fall and to host you there as soon as it’s safe to do so.
We’re thinking about creative ways to bid farewell to our space from afar. In the meantime, we are grateful as ever to every member of our wonderful community for taking the leap and showing up online with us. Stay safe and write on, dear Grubbies.

With gratitude,

Eve Bridburg
