This #GivingTuesdayNow,
Support Poet-Teachers!
May 4th, 2020

Dear Friends,

May 5th marks Giving Tuesday Now - an event set to spark an increase in grassroots generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

All online donations made now through May 10th will go to directly support our regional coordinators throughout the state.  Regional coordinators are master poet-teachers and grassroots community artists devoted to spreading the power of poetry to young people in their home towns and cities.  They hold the vision to create and build the CalPoets' program within their county.  These folks are the true lifeblood and the heartbeat of our organization.

The work of California Poets in the Schools has taken on new significance in this unprecedented time. Writing provides a meaningful way for people of all ages to communicate their experiences, to process grief and pain, and to imagine the future.  CalPoets continues to publish youth poems generated from our online poetry workshop, helping to record the diversity of experience from the midst of the pandemic.  This poem pretty much sums it up:
Virus Feelings Blues

Some people are feeling okay
I said, some people are feeling okay
Everybody wants the virus to stop today.
The world feels gray.
I said, the world feels gray.
I hope this virus will go away.

The literary arts are perhaps our most democratic art form; CalPoets' alone reaches more than 22,000 young people each year!  Warm thanks for supporting poetry, the arts, and our teaching artists through the COVID-19 crisis.

In gratitude,
