SPOTLIGHT: THE PANDEMIC IS NO MATCH FOR OUR ADVOCACY!
The AIB meets with Sen. Scott Bennett

Members of Community Choices’ Advocacy Initiatives Board had a zoom meeting with State Senator Scott Bennett on April 30th to share changes they’d like to see Illinois legislators make in the near future.  The meeting was arranged by Arc of Illinois staff as a lead up to their virtual Going Home Advocacy Day.

Tobie Wood, Jaz Davis, Eric Beasley and Sarah Demissie shared with Senator Bennett that they would like to see funding for Employment 1st increased in the state of Illinois.  Funding should also increase for support and services that help people find and keep jobs in their communities.   They also told Senator Bennett that they want legislators to work to end the use of seclusion and restraints in schools, and they would rather funds be allocated for mandatory de-escalation, trigger and behavior training for all school staff at all education levels.

Finally, the group emphasized to Senator Bennett how important it is that he listen to the voices of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities when it comes to matters that affect them.  They are the experts in their lives and have the lived experiences to speak from.  From a CC staff perspective I felt very proud to be a part of this meeting, and blown away by our members’ abilities to advocate in convincing ways.

BUILDING VIRTUAL BRIDGES TO THE COMMUNITY
We continue to be so excited with how much participation we’ve had at our Zoom Virtual Connections. Even though we can’t be together in person, talking, learning, and relaxing together everyday has been a bright spot for all of us in these anxious times! We’ve settled into a great rhythm each week with three sessions a day.

Groups include:
  • I’m With Her - CC’s Women’s Group focusing on Intersectional Feminism and Women who’ve been leaders in their communities
  • He-Ros - CC’s Men’s Group focusing on Men who’ve pushed for progressive and inclusive community growth
  • Social and Emotional Skills
  • Let’s Move
  • Cooking
  • Crafter’s Circle
  • Movie and Member Generated Trivia
  • Job Club
  • Quarantini Happy Hour
  • And more!
Beyond connecting, we’ve also all learned so much about how to use technology and how we can start creating more virtual bridges to the broader community!
THANK YOU  CLAIRE!
A special thank you to Claire Vail for being our first Community Host! Claire has been joining us on Tuesdays for several weeks to host cooking classes! She led our members through making pancakes, eggs, omelets, and next week - english muffin pizza and variations!
ENJOY OUR QUARANTINI PLAY LIST
Last week our members shared their favorite songs at our Quarantini Happy Hour and we all enjoyed a lively Friday afternoon dance party! We don’t think we should hog all the fun so we’re happy to pass along the playlist. We hope you’ll all enjoy your own dance party!

Ya'll have some good taste!

BRINGING IN THE WHOLE COMMUNITY!
Join us on Wednesdays and Fridays for our 10am member check-ins to meet some of the cool people in the C-U community.  We want to connect you with some of the people you may see around when we’re able to go places again.   Places like the Urbana Free Library, Makerspace, and the Urbana Aquatics Center.  We also want to connect you with people who work to make sure there are services available in C-U.  People like our board members, Champaign County staff, and service providers.  Join in to get to know these people - what they do, their favorite movie, favorite restaurant, and what’s helping them get through the quarantine.  Discover what you have in common with them, and what you can learn from each other!

PARTICIPANT SURVEY
It is extremely important to everyone at Community Choices that we continually learn and adjust our supports to be the most effective and beneficial to those we work with.

One way that we do this is to conduct an annual participant and member survey. This evaluation asks questions about your experiences with the core aspects of each of our programs and gives participants and opportunity to share both what's working and not working.

We learn a lot from this survey every year, but the more feedback we get, the more helpful it is! We hope that everyone we've worked with will participate!

In the next couple of days you will get an email from a Community Choices staff person with a link for the online survey. Please take a few minutes to fill it out!
SUPPORT YOUR COOPERATIVE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
Community Choices, like so many organizations and business, is looking towards a very uncertain future. Much of what we expected to be doing in the next year, we're now having to re-think because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This crisis has reminded us how much we all depend on each other and how critically important human connection and community is to each one of us. Rather than closing us down, however, it has re-doubled our commitment to supporting our Cooperative and ensuring that people have their basic needs met as well as their human need for connection.

If you are able, we are asking that you consider donating to Community Choices so that we can look to the future with eagerness, creativity and confidence. Help us moved into the next year knowing that we'll have the resources needed to continue our work!

Tomorrow is #GivingTuesdayNow. Join the nationwide push for generosity and collaboration - consider giving to Community Choices!

INFORMATION AND RESOURCES
MASKS 101
Face masks will be a new reality for everyone in Illinois this May. The Governor announced a mandate requiring Illinois residents over the age of 2 who can tolerate a face covering to wear a face mask, cloth or disposable, when in a public place where a person cannot maintain social distancing. Examples of such places where a mask will be required include:
  • Shopping at essential businesses, like grocery stores or pharmacies,
  • Picking up food from the drive thru or curbside pickup,
  • While visiting your healthcare provider,
  • Traveling on public transportation,
  • Interacting with customers, clients, or coworkers at essential businesses,
  • When feeling sick, coughing, or sneezing.
  • You may also need to wear a mask if you have a job that requires you to interact with the public. For example, when CC staff return to our office, we may wear masks to protect ourselves and our members from the spread of COVID-19.
If you’ve never worn a face mask before, it can take some getting used to. But there are some things you can do to make the experience more comfortable and keep yourself protected.
  • Your face mask should cover your nose and mouth and fit securely to your face. Be sure that you can breathe in your mask!
  • Try to adjust the mask and make it comfortable before you leave your home or vehicle so that you do not touch the front of the mask once you are out in public.
  • If you must touch your mask while in public, be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer immediately after.
  • To remove your mask, touch only the ties or elastic holding the mask in place. Avoid touching the front of the mask. Immediately wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after removing your face mask.
  • It can be useful to have a designated bag to store your mask in before you wash it so that the mask does not touch a lot of different surfaces. Paper or plastic baggies work well for this purpose.
  • The CDC has a helpful factsheet for using and making face masks - Read it HERE
Bottom Line on Masks & Gloves:
  • Wear a mask when you are in “exposure” zones (mainly places with other people).
  • Treat your home, car, and yard as safe places (no mask or gloves).
  • Be on high alert on what you are doing with your hands when you are in “danger zones.” This is when you must not touch your face.
  • Consider wearing gloves (even winter gloves or work gloves can be helpful) but only for short periods of time and only when in “touch exposure” danger zones.
  • Remove your gloves (and mask) when you return to your safe place.
  • Wash your hands every single time you take off your gloves or mask or move from a danger zone back to a safe zone.
  • When you are at home and after washing up, you can relax, scratch your nose, rub your eyes and floss your teeth…without worry.
TELL US YOUR MASK STORY!
When we wear masks we lose some of the stories that our facial expressions share with those around us - but each mask seems to have it's own story! Here's some of ours!

Tell us your Mask Story and we'll share it! Send a pic of you in your mask along with short story about where it came from! Send them to Becca at becca.communitychoices@gmail.com

INFORMATION AND UPDATES
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FUND
These last few weeks have made us all appreciate how important technology can be for communication. Let's make this possible for ALL people ALL the time!

The Arc of Illinois has developed an Assistive Technology Fund. This program will fund, or partially fund, the purchase of assistive technology for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities who have received an evaluation/assessment from a qualified provider but the purchase is not subsidized by Medicaid, Medicare or Private Insurance.

Our goal through the Assistive Technology Fund is to enhance and improve the quality of life for persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities by providing opportunities for individuals to receive technology to help with education, employment, community living and independence.

The maximum amount funded will be $500.00 per person or family. In order to help more people, we will only fund one device or software. Upon approval, the device will be shipped directly to the applicant.

Who Can Apply?
A person with an intellectual or developmental disability
Family member on behalf of a person with an intellectual or developmental disability
Must be an Illinois resident

How Do I Apply?
The application form must be completed and returned to The Arc of Illinois
You must include a letter from a doctor, health care provider, or someone else who works closely with the individual to show the need for the assistive technology device, how it would benefit the individual, and what type of device is needed.
Access the Online Application HERE

For More information check out the Arc Website HERE or let a CC staff person know and we can help you navigate an application!
