Many of you have asked how our team is doing so I'll be turning over this space to them in the coming weeks. Here's a message from Emma. ~ Kelly

I just listened to an interview Cheryl Strayed did with George Saunders. He talks about this communal moment we're in as like the time between starting to fall and hitting the ground. You know you're falling, sure, but how hard are we going to hit? Where will it hurt? Yes, it stinks that we're falling, but the disturbing part is the not knowing. How will the ground rise up to meet us?

For me, in free fall, I've found that my traditional meditation practice isn't quite doing it for me. Sitting meditation is a real no-go; it's agitating and not serving me one iota. Instead, I'm walking, running (ugh), and sitting on tree stumps. I'm planning yoga classes and treasuring the moments I see your faces on Zoom (no, it's not as good as in person, but, yes, it is still so very, very lovely). I'm observing the way I'm responding to "not knowing" and trying to not judge myself for hating it.

This moment in time feels both personal and universal. I am mourning alone and also alongside of so much of the world. We (we as in "we yoga teachers") talk about the macrocosm revealing itself in the microcosm. In the past, there have been brief, often beautiful, moments where I've experienced that on the mat. These past weeks this truth has been hitting me over and over again like a semi. We are together in feeling alone.

And so, a contradiction: We are connected [and] I miss you.

Love,
Emma

Support Past Tense Teachers Directly

Many of our team members are full-time teachers who have just lost a significant amount of income or are hourly workers who are now at risk. While we are working together to support one another, you are welcome to donate directly to PT team members here. None of this will go to the studio. It will go to teachers and staff in need.
