Message From The Director

I will have to admit that my original letter was completely different from the one that you are about to read.  For starters, I was hoping to send this newsletter much sooner.  Unfortunately, similar to much of the rest of the world, our plans changed abruptly and we have had to adapt to the current state of affairs.  We are learning how to navigate in the new normal, but that does not mean that we have not stayed busy.  In fact, we can assure you that we have our thinking caps.  We are working on how to stay active and connected with you, so if you have any ideas, please feel free to share them with us.

We started 2020 on a path that was very typical for us.  We held the first Urban and Economic Development Summit on February 14.  We collaborated with the Economics Department at Fresno State (thank you Dr. David Vera!) to put together an impressive line-up of speakers focusing on economic development in the Central Valley.  Our keynote speaker was Dr. Enrico Moretti, an urban and labor economist from UC Berkeley.  Dr. Moretti’s research has been extensively recognized nationally and internationally.  His 2013 book “The New Geography of Jobs” has been praised as a modern take on how local policymakers need to address urban and economic growth.  After Dr. Moretti’s presentation, we hosted Claire Whitmer from the City of Fresno, Amanda Bosland from the Economic Development Corporation, and Andy Haussler from the City of Clovis.  They addressed questions from the audience on their vision and plans for economic development in Fresno County.  We thank them for their candor, their enthusiasm, and particularly for their expressed affection for our cities.  We thank all participants for making this a very successful event!

We were also planning several events throughout the semester, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed our working conditions and we had to cancel all planned events.  We are still hosting one event online.  On May 13, we are collaborating with the U.S. Green Building Council Central California to address a much-needed informational gap in commercial real estate.  The event will focus on Green Real Estate.  We are looking to provide attendees with information on sustainable energy-saving opportunities.  Our speaker will be
Jessica Loeper, Vice President at Verdani Partners, a “leading full-service sustainability consulting firm with over 20 years of experience in sustainable real estate.”

I am guessing that everybody is still in the process of adapting to the new living conditions.  I hope that you and your families are staying healthy and safe.  As the pandemic evolves, many resources have become available for people to learn how to navigate in these difficult times.  I can imagine that many of you have already attended several videoconferences on the impact of COVID-19 on the real estate economy.  We have compiled a series of articles and data for you to get an understanding of what is going on, what is changing, and how your real estate business is going to be affected.  If you can provide information that we can share with others, please do not hesitate to contact us at
gazarian@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Once again, we look forward to a different yet exciting year.  If you are interested in attending and/or sponsoring our events, please do not hesitate to contact us at
gazarian@mail.fresnostate.edu. We really appreciate all your help and support! Also, please let us know if you have any suggestions for this newsletter.  We will be happy to address your specific interests.

Sincerely,

Andres Jauregui (AJ)
