DEEP THOUGHTS

This month’s deep thought is about giving and receiving feedback.

I used to host a weekly song circle in New York City.

Every Monday night, fellow songwriters would show up to my apartment armed with bottles of wine to go with a simple salad and pasta dinner I prepared. Participants would play their new song once, pass out lyric sheets, and then play it again, after which the floor was open for feedback.

We used a deck of playing cards with a Tasmanian devil on the back to determine starting order. Those cards gave the group its name, the Tasmanian Devil Club, or TDC

I remember one songwriter who brought in a song with a lyric about “purple rain." One of our core members asked nicely what her intent was in quoting a famous Prince lyric. She got very defensive, and when it came his turn to play a song, she went on the attack, saying something like, “Who are you to question my lyrics when you’ve written such drivel!” Needless to say, she wasn’t invited back.

Any artist will tell you that the key to creating is being able to repeatedly fall in love with an idea, and then reject it when you find something better. Getting constructive feedback can be so helpful to that process.

When I give feedback, I try hard to make sure the person I’m giving it to feels safe receiving it, because I know my lens is imperfect and that all art is subjective. If someone is feeling insecure and fragile about their creation, a familiar place for many of us, I try to be encouraging. Sometimes, being positive can act as its own creative catalyst. But if someone really wants critical feedback, the worst thing I can do is say something is great (unless I really feel that way!).
As an aside, this is why asking for feedback from your life partner about anything (or vice-versa) can be challenging! You’re asking them to critique you while at the same time making sure you feel safe and loved.

In the past four weeks, I’ve rebooted the TDC songwriting circle over Zoom, and it’s motivated me to co-write three new songs with Missy and Whools. While sadly there isn’t any pasta or wine to be shared (not a great idea to start drinking at 2pm in the afternoon!), the feedback we give each other is as helpful and intimate as I remembered.

The first of the new songs is called God and Democracy, and the arrangement is inspired by classic Springsteen and Southside Johnny. Wayne Miller did a great job producing it remotely, as did Jeff Bond with the lyric video. You can check it out below.
As expected, our May shows have been officially canceled and we’re working on rescheduling for later in the year. Want to see a set in the meantime? I’m partnering with City Winery to bring you a live personalized Mother’s Day set that you can gift to your Mom or anyone else. I’m honored to be part of a group that includes Martin Sexton, Lisa Loeb, and Dar Williams.

The cost to hear a personalized Pete set is $150. City Winery will take 30% (they can use the help!), and I will donate the remainder to the Storyteller Children’s Center, a charity that does an incredible job helping homeless and at-risk young children. You can sign up here the deadline is Friday, May 1. If you’d like to hear the set but that price is too steep, please email me and I’ll help work something out.

Writing these newsletters helps me reflect and grow, and I hope that reading them sparks some insight or creativity on your part. It’s also ok if you just like reading them!
